02 Sensor (CEL)

First off let me say yes I have searched, but there are all kinds of outdated and contradicting info on here. I have a RP supercat, turboXS exhaust, and REVI intake. Ive been running this set-up for close to 6 months and the check engine light has recently come on. Im just wondering if anybody with personal experiance has been able to solve this problem with a bung (spacer) or possibly the far fecthed o2 fooler (which our cars seem to smart for). Or am I just going to have to do the wrench work and put back on the stock cat? I need to get my car inspected, otherwise I would just deal with the CEL.

Any help would be greatly apprecciated.

Your cat is dead.

Possibly dead-and-gone.

I've seen two metal-substrate cats that were absolutely empty after a good run. Melted, shredded and blown away, just a trail of sparks on the track.

Foolers don't work, spacers are a myth, however, if you ignore it for about thirty start cycles, it will change to a stored code, and the light will go out.

Thanks stealth. I guess i'll have to pull off the cat and give it a visual inspection and hope that your not right. I've only put about 5000 miles on the cat, and I will be pretty heated if your right. I always thought of RP as a quality product. Ill re-post and let you know my findings.

Going back to what stealth said, does the 30 start method work with regular midpipes too? Or just a supercat?

Have you pulled the code to see what it is exactely? I got a CEL running the same setup recently after only about 5k miles too. The code was reading "secondary O2 sensor slow to respond."

Not sure why, but when I pulled the thing out, it had all kinds gooey build-up on it. Perhaps I didn't get the thing seated right and crap just started building up on it from the atmosphere ?

Regardless, after pulling, I sprayed the hell out of it with Brake cleaner (electronics cleaner would work too), re-installed, and haven't had a problem since. So, check the code to find out what's really going on before pulling the sucker off.

my CEL goes on and off, varying between days. weird. i have a feeling it's my cat. it says it's the o2 sensor, and sometimes at idle in traffic it 'bogs' down to 500rpm leaving me to rev it up a bit to keep it from turning off.

i'm running pca this weekend, should I throw my stock cat converter back on?

Hey Cody, my car does that too from time to time. I have nothing but a K&N Typhoon. It almost stalls, all the lights go on just as if its going to stall, then it catches itself. No idea why.

Alano, the lightshow doesn't really happen to me, but it has once.

Anyone else have any input?

Yeah, also waiting on some input about that and the CEL. Like I said, Im wanting to put on my resonated midpipe with my full custom 3" exhaust and wanting to know if it is possible to get rid of the CEL.

Yeah, my RP Supercat was toasted as well. You might want to give them a call though as theya re pretty responsive, and generally very cool about replacements.

I can tell you guys with stalling type issues that mine does the same thing. I know my code is for an 02 sensor. I have had it pulled twice, and I think whats happening is the 02 is reading rich so the computer trys to lean out the mixture and causes a little case of gas starvation. Im going to try and pull out the 02 sensors today to clean them up and see if that helps.

Oh yeah and thanks for all the input.

Sorry to tell you this but if the car nearly stalls then it sounds like your engine is going bad... but it could mean a numerous other things. It's just that this is a normal symptom of an engine going bad.

Whenever I pull the battery, my engine runs like **** the first few drive cycle (or the first 3-4 hours), it stalls like crazy, I feel sorry that I have to restart my car like 10 times at stop light, cuz it just *rooooommm ..... doooommm* and die.

After the first few cycle, it goes back to normal, never stall. no problems, happy. (thats why I try to avoid pulling my battery as much as possible)

lately, my gas mileage is getting *worst* and *worst*. Im not sure if its the engine dying or what. It seems fine to me. No power lost when hot or whatever, pulls very strong and stuff. Now after reading more and more on the issue, Im starting to think, is my front O2 sensor on its way to heaven or something. The problem is, if it does not throw a code, I cannot get it replace for free. I mean I can afford it, but why do I have to pay for something that should be covered by Warranty ? Is there a reimburse program for Mazda for DIY people like me ? A new front O2 sensor is like 240 something bux.

I was also having this problem, which was gone after I got my oil change. It can't be due to a dying motor for me, my car only has 6k miles on it. Trying to see what else it could have been, but so far so good.
