When it happens it is usually in the first run group of the day. The driver of the vette was in TTA. The accident happened on around lap 3 of the first session on Sunday morning.

Yea, a vette did that in turn 5 at Road Atlanta (BMW Club I think) on the first lap of first session of the day.

Cold morning + cold track + cold driver + hot foot = Damage

I have BlueRen's policy here in front of me. Here's what it states verbatim:

EXCLUSIONS:
12. Bodily injury or property damage occurring while preparing for or taking part in a prearranged or organized racing or speed contest.

My policy states:
EXCLUSIONS:
4. Any vehicle while being operated in, or in practice for, any driving contest or challenge.

I'm going to have my sister review them to see if either applies to HPDE track days.

Hmmm - those pics make me want to stick to auto-cross instead of track. Walls do bad things to cars. Cones? Not so much.

That sounds like exactly the language to keep it vague enough to make anything like that a policy violation.

What really sucks is that it is vague enough to interpret either way. Which means they can do what they want. You could fight it but at what expense? I interpret it to mean only for racing or preparing to race. They would argue that if you are on a race track and that you are learning how to drive on it then you are preparing or learning how to race.

I would suggest that this does not look good and if your insurance company wants to play hard ball, the ball belongs to them and they will let us play if they want to.

My interpretation of those statements is that neither of those exclusions would apply to HPDE days. HPDE's are neither a "organized racing or speed contest" or a "driving contest or challenge"

I'm sure it wouldnt be too hard to convince a mediator of them being "preperation" for such events though.

Agreed, anybody looking to pull for the insurance company's side would certainly "Clamp-on" to Any vehicle while being operated in, or in practice for, any driving contest or challenge

I am no attorney but in practice I don't think it would not be a big stretch, it's just your word that you "never really intended" to go racing once you got the hang of it.

The name HPDE says it.. High Performance Driver's Ed. You aren't learnin' to slowly drive Miss Daisy to the stowe...

For all of you Road Atlanta Addicts, I have to add to the dangers of turn 4. I have had 2 instructors strongly suggest I keep it 7-8/10 around 4 instead of 9/10. They both said that it is a deceptive looking corner that looks innocuous but because of the speed involved (Most cars easily 70-85 MPH) and proximity of the wall when crap happens, it usually turns into a severe impact and the resulting yard sale of car parts all over the place.

One of the lead LMP2 car lost it there (Presumably suspension failure) at the Petit Lemans this year an the scene looked like a plane crash.

Only good news is that the guy who crashed at Road America said his insurance WAS paying and did total the car. I wonder what he said to them and what his policy reads.

Well I know his forum name, but don't want to expose him if he'd like to keep it under wraps. I'll PM him with a link and let him decide if he would like to answer.

Good deal! The two of you or are you bringing some of your norther brethren with ya'll this time? We love sharing our facilities with our buds from the cold windy. Are you guys looking at NASA, Panoz, BMWCCA or something else? And when are you looking at, Dec. or spring?

I think we will have a big showing here in the spring from the GA gang as well so this could be REALLY exciting! I don't think it is unreasonable to expect 10 RX-8s at RA next spring if you are bringing 2 or 3 down with ya.

(This thread has been robbed... my humble apologies Blue)

I wrecked my motorcycle during a track day when I had full coverage from State Farm. I almost didn't even call them because I just assumed it wasn't covered. I did finally call them and explain what happened, and they covered it with no problems because it wasn't a competition. My bike was totaled, so they paid me for the value of the bike. Contrary to what many have stated here as a gaurantee that you will be dropped, my rates were not even raised and I still have full coverage on my bike and all of my cars with State Farm.

I'm not saying you won't get dropped if you have a claim, but I certainly wasn't. Things may have changed in the few years since my claim, but overall I was thrilled with State Farms coverage.
