new from Charleston, SC....shop advice?

hello all,

I just moved to Charleston from Asheville. I bought a 2005 RX-8 right before moving and love it. Just wanted to introduce myself real quick and ask for some advice.

My name is Craig, i'm 23, graduated from Appalachian State last July. Now working as an Information Security Analyst for Honeywell Technology Solutions.

I need to get my trans/diff fluid and oil changed out. Does anyone know of anywhere local I can trust with it? Thanks!

I've seen a couple 8's down here. Silver near Folly Beach, and a Red on 526

hey man I don't know if your oil is changed yet but there is a Mazda dealership in North Charleston on Ashley Phosphate. As far as high performance shops there is not many of them. There is the Show Zone on Ladson Rd. but I am not 100% if they do oil changes there or not. Any of the Speedy Oil changes are good as well in North Charleston. A friend of the family owns the one in Summerville and they do a good job and you can watch them work on your car, so the comfort is there as to knowing what is going on with your car!!! Hope the information helps, if I think of anything I will be glad to let you know.

The only person I trust changing my fluids and oil is myself, no one else gets near my car (DIY is my middle name). So if you want to get to know your car better and not have problems with it, get down and dirty. Of course, you have to do your research before you start doing something...

PS. it is really simple to change them

I live on James Island and Dinkins Auto on Camp Rd is a good shop. The guy who runs it used to own an RX7 so he's more familiar with the rotary engine than most. I get my work done there. He's kind of pricey but he knows what he's doing.

I know what you mean by the rain man, it's killing my paycheck since I work in motorcycle sales. The rain just needs to stop so I can get on the bike and ride some more or take the top off of the Jeep while I still have it. Can't wait for the RX-8 though. Pretty stoked!

Hi Paul.

For general maintenance stuff, there's a good guy who runs Automotive Perfection on Cross County Road in North Charleston. Reasonable rates, honest guy. Now, it's been a few years since I've used him, so that may have changed - but it is a small shop where the owner is one of the wrenches, so I doubt it. I wouldn't ask him to rebuild my (rotary) motor, but other than that he's perfectly competent.

There's a good body guy I've used before (for future reference) up in Summerville - Home Town Auto Body. Great work on little dings and such on my Whitewater Pearl '05, if you need something you don't want insurance involved in (in my case, I backed into a bracket in a parking garage).

Thats some good info, thanks. Could be pretty useful, though Im still going to do all maintenance myself if possible. The next autocross in Greenville seems too far now that i know about the ones in Savannah. Also, Tarheel club in NC has some autocross and rallycross events in myrtle area. Hour and a half (says google maps, so: 70mins) aint bad. Are you thinking of heading to the mazda rally in myrtle this weekend?

Yeah, I do all my own maintenance when I can. Anything I'd need a lift for, though, I farm out. Thankfully, that's been not applicable to the '8.

I've done several autocrosses with Tarheel and some track days too. They're a good bunch. I didn't know they came as far as Myrtle Bch. They do autocrosses in Sanford at their old airport that are pretty fun.

I think I'm done until I get the body damage fixed - looks like that's turning into a courtroom fight. I've only got another month of freedom anyway - November is all prepping for exams and the SC bar.

I have two ramps, two jackstands, and some bubble wrap (for the floor) which has been enough. Never needed all 4 wheels off at once.

Yea you should probably study for that... You only get one shot right?
