NASA Track Day- Road Atlanta-Aug. 13 & 14

All right, it has not been started yet, so here it goes. There is another NASA track day at Road Atlanta, on August 13 & 14, 2005. It is $349, a little high, but I am saving my pennies now.

I plan on making this my first track day. I know a bunch of the Georgia Crew enjoy these track days. I will be in HPDE 1, since this is my first track day. Who else is interested

Registration can be done here: http://www.nasa-southeast.com/2005Aug13/event.shtml

DRIVING

This is so tempting for me...but I am afraid of the costs should an accident occur. If someone hits me or I hit them, does insurance handle it? I am going to RA this monday on the crotch rocket.....

Some of the veterans should chime in here, since they will know more about it than me.

But from reading the NASA site, there are only certain places that you are allowed to pass, and if you are like me and have not done this in your CAR, you will have an instructor with you. He does not want you to have a wreck, and more than you do. And you drive at the pace that you are comfortable. If you are not driving like an idiot, and are able to watch for those that are, it should be a safe, fun environment to drive your car like it was meant to be driven.

how far is road atlanta from, say, washington dc???

Phlash 06-23-2005 01:14 PM

Cost has gone up because RA increased their track fees. NASA has to pass on the increase as does Panoz and the others that run that track.

djesto,

The chances are sooooo slim of you being hit. However there is this amazing concrete wall that surrounds the track (closer to the track in some areas than others) that you have to deal with (Charlie claims he has hit them all). You will have an instructor with you for both HPDE1 and HPDE2. Once you're in HPDE2, your instructor can write you off to go solo in HPDE2 and beyond. Passing is only allowed at the three straights. HPDE1 and 2 are go at your own pace. I found that if you talk with your instructor up front and let him/her know your concerns and goals for the weekend, you both have a much better time and learn more. The whole time, talk, talk, talk. Hell, the instructor is free, take advantage of em.

As far as insurance in concerned on your car, this is "drivers ed". You're not racing. If you are on the line because of that issue (and who isn't), talk with your insurance rep/company. I would imagine that it is handled the same way it is for your bike should anything happen.

Hope that helps....

I'm gonna be there for this event, but not sure if I'm working it or running it. But, I will be there. If I end up working it, I'm once again pulling the beast to camp at the track. If anyone else cares to stay at the track let me know, It'll be a good time I'm sure(i read on the NASA site something about free beer from Jim....).

L8APEX 06-23-2005 01:59 PM

Phlash, thanks for the added input.

I have not figured out what day HPDE 1 is, on the registration site it lists both days. I am going to register probably next week, so I will clarify some of that.

ZoomZoomH 06-23-2005 02:03 PM

yeah i think all HPDE's are for both days, basically done between races as far as I recall when I went to a NASA weekend event up here at Summit Point...

HPDE1, 2, 3, and 4 all run both days all day. sessions are 20 to 30 miniutes. NASA runs a tight schedule. If things get behind sometimes they let 3 and 4 run together to make up time.

I'll seriously consider this... after 3 events at VIR i'm kinda sick of it, as amazing of a track as it is :D

now i'll just have to convince a few local track drivers to come along with me :D

So the $350 gets you two days of track time?

It would not matter to me, but this is bargaining material with the wife.

Phlash 06-23-2005 02:17 PM

Yes, two days...track and classroom instruction (god forbid, don't be late for class...trust me....good thing I had driven the track before....)

L8APEX 06-23-2005 02:45 PM

Awesome, more fun for us.

Phlash suffered a little 'detention' after school back in March :p :D

Don't think he will be late ever again!

SilverEIGHT 06-23-2005 05:25 PM

As far as I can tell I will be there with my camera to capture the gang. I'm not running until I get some autox under my belt.
