yo'all... just a head's up... Having been to the Dragon / Gap 4 times before, I really hate to rain on anyone's parade... pun intended.... but...
they've evacuated Newland NC tonight. if you look at :
http://www.wunderground.com/weathers...p?ID=KNCNEWLA1
you'll see they've received nearly 19" of rain today-much of it in the past several hours. Yeah, I had to look twice...19".... they started getting nearly 2" per hour about 7:30PM and it's up to over 5" / hour at 9:30pm and still raining hard with several wind gusts at 40MPH.
[now up to 6.25"/hour, over 20" today as of 10:28PM!!]
If any Gap veterans are reading this and have been in the area when there's been substantial rain you may be able to confirm this.
Several years I was at the Gap and it rained a good bit overnight my last night(probably 1-2"). On the way back I took a road through TN to the NE that is near the Smokey Mtn nat'l park. The creek/river along that road was raging (it was still raining some in the morning) and later making my way across TN there was water across some roads.
Tapoco Lodge(at the south end of the tail, and home to many gap gatherings) sits on a small creek, don't recall the name. There are places along the tail of the dragon that are prone to water coming over the road with just a little rain. I think this weekend could be " a wash ". As I said earlier tonight I'll keep watching the weather reports and will try to find updates at the tailofthedragon.com... but be advised it could be a nasty weekend to visit ANY where close the Asheville/Knoxville area of the Appalachain's this Friday,Saturday.
p.s. Newland NC is not far from Little Switzerland which is right off of the Bluegrass Pkwy about 20-30 miles north of Asheville.
[edit Wednesday morning]
I understand now what happened with the weather monitoring equipment at that station (probably) - the rain gauge couldn't empty and instead of resetting each half hour kept accumulating. But they've still had over 7" yesterday and another several this morning. sorry to post 20"...

Weather forecasts for this weekend have less than a 15% chance of rain predicted.

Here in K-town it has rained for the last two days but is now moving on. Weather up near the Dragon pretty much mirrors the weather here with the exception of the Cherohala Skyway due to it's elevation.
I ran it about a month ago on my bike with rain in the area and the beautiful thing is that you can work around the rain for the most part. We headed to the Skyway and didn't like the way it looked so we doubled back and hit Foothills Parkway for a warm up and followed it up with the Dragon. We never made it to the Skyway that day but when we got to the NC side of the Dragon all the rain was gone.
Forecasts in the area here and up in Robbinsville call for either sun or scattered clouds from Friday thru Sunday so I think we are in the clear. It looks like it is going to be a busy weekend with the our group, the S2000 crew and the Homeland Sportbikes crew in the area from the 10th to the 17th. It should be a blast. I got my new camera mount in yesterday so I can't wait to get some quality footage. See you all there!

pfft...rain
I thought of something earlier..cell phone service is likely to be pretty poor in the area, and if anyone needs to contact someone already at the mansion (like when I get lost and need to call randy) it's going to be difficult..is there a landline at the mansion?

These motels are about t block away from Dave and Busters.
Remember....
Coming North on I-95, as you're gettitng into Jacksonville, you will PASS the I-295 NORTH exit, then PHILLIPS HWY exit, then Southside BLVD exit, then BAYMEADOWS exit, then the next is the BUTLER BLVD/JAX BEACHES exit NUMBER 344. TAKE THAT ONE..... it will slope off to the right, and right as it curves right, take the FIRST little side road to the right. Back there, if you go straight, you'll find Dave and Buster's plus about 3 or 4 motels within a block of each other.
Call before you leave Miami....I'm not sure what their occupancy or prices are like. If you have any other questions, lemmee know....
I picked up my 8 today. YEEEEEE HAW!
They still need to apply the clear bra, but I told them I NEEDED my car TODAY and I'll bring it back to geth the clear bra applied.
Having the driver-side graphics re-applied tomorrow. Also picked up another bounty of doorprizes, to include RX8 t-shirts, Polo shirts, hats, lapel pins and rotary-shaped tire valve-stem-cover-thingies. Tonight, I'll be emailing out everyone's cellphone number and other minor info.
SEEYAS IN TWO DAYS!!! :D :D
