Atlanta here I come -- seeking advice

So come June I will be moving down to the HOTlanta to start a full time job with Manhattan Associates. They are located just outside the Northwest city limits. I have to move down there somewhat blind (via Craigs List and whatnot), so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as far as living area.

I have been told that Buckhead is a cool place to live? I am 23 and still interested in being able to walk home from a bar (or at least a short taxi ride).

Anyway, anything you want to tell me about Atlanta in general, housing aside, would also be appreciated. Seems like a cool city (from my 4 days there) and I am getting excited to be someplace new and warm.

Looking forward to meeting some RX8 locals! (I will need a tint job pretty quickly once I get down there)

I lived there few years ago but go there quite often. My wife almost got a job there last June and we kind of looked at the area.

There is a new area called midtown and it might be a great place to live. Far as I know its quite pricey to buy but you might save time during rush hours as you'll be travelling the opposite direction.

Otherwise, I would live as close to where you work as traffic is a bitch in ATL.

Find a Realtor, tell them what you want, and have them send you brochures and go from there, or contact the local chamber of commerce via email, of the different local areas you might consider and they should each send you a package of all kinds of information!

Midtown or Little 5 Points are good areas to be. Litlle 5 is a bit more on the "punk" side of things, however, lot's of good bars. If you can afford it, Just NW of downtown is really starting to come up (Atlantic Station), but $$$. I know a great realtor here that can help you out, he found my place and a few for some friends.

Welcome to the ATL in advance. You'll love the traffic!!!

Seriously tho, we got a great group down here full of track hoes and a handful of "show" guys. Take a look at the GARX8club, a step-child of this board, and introduce yourself.

Yup, get a tint, or buy a window sunshade.
If you want to be able to walk to a bar, you're gonna pretty much have to be intown. It's pricier, but some real cool areas. If you can afford it, Atlantic Station as mentioned is sweet. Buckhead is also very cool. Midtown and Little 5, ditto on what Gimlet said.
Alot depends on if u want to buy or rent. I rent on the NW side in Smyrna/Vinings area. 5-10$ cab from a lot of cool places, and 20$ to downtown/Buckhead.
As Gimlet said, hit Garx8club.com.

*edit* - I just looked up your company. Another computer guru in town - you definitely need to get on the local site.
And your main office is in Wildwood. Thats 5 min away from where I live. You ought to look around this area.

Welcome to GA Gang! I think you will like it here. Will be a little adjustment from NJ/PA but I assure you, our group is as good as they come. We have a great tuner shop (Mazcare) in Marietta that actually sponsors our website ( http://garx8club.com ) and I'm sure you've heard of Mazmart for those used parts.

Do you like to participate in any events like, mountain runs, tracking, spectator road race events... we got lot's to do. Hope to see ya soon.

Awesome, thanks for the help. I'll be looking to rent right off the bat. Its strange cause I can afford a decent place, but I could be out of town a lot, so not sure if I want to spend more than I have to.

dbright, i cant move in near you, there would be too many 8s! Just kidding. Do you see a lot of RX-8s around down there? I didnt see one all weekend when I was down a couple weeks ago.

I checked out the local site, looks cool (was looking at your pictures silver eight). I definitely cant wait for some southern runs out in the country. so those moutain runs sound great. HPDE and track events are also things I'm interested in getting involved in, but am somewhat capital-impaired for the next couple of months.

Rarely see 8's. Talk to Gimlet if you want to look around Buckhead/Little 5/Midtown area. If you want near work, let me know. I can at least tell you if someplace you are thinking about is a dive. Some real nice places to rent around here.
I am in a gated apt about 10 mins from where u work, 1350 sq ft 2 bd/2ba, sunroom, all the amenities, a lake, almost no kids, covered car wash bays, lagoon pool, gym, 6 tennis courts, free gas grills at every building. No bus svc. Peaceful.
But look in city too, I spent my years there and loved it - just got over it and wanted "the city" on my terms, not everyday.

A couple weeks ago my poker bud got mugged at gunpoint in Little 5. I never really liked the area and this seals it.

I don't have much to add on the real estate side, but just wanted to go ahead and welcome you to Atlanta when you get here. There is a lot to do, and plenty of great local bars, restaurants and places to socialize. And, as mentioned, we have a good group of owners around here, that try to stay active. We look forward to you joining us.

Gimlet- Dont know where he was exactly, he was shook up pretty bad about the whole thing. I know it was at night and he was alone (not smart, IMO). Havent talked to him lately as he hasnt returned to our game.

Oh, BTW, welcome to Atlanta, TAB. There are some great places to live all around town. Look forward to meeting and greeting ya.
