has the car had a recent compression test?

 

yes, by Mazda dealer using the Mazda tool in April, 2021. See attachment from the dealer. They indicated R1 passed, R2 failed. They said in their experience that for 95K mi, the result was impressive.

 

i ask because my local dealer just quored $350 for the test. feels excessive, any opinion?

 

$155 out the door. And they did it per the manual with the correct tools. Be careful, as some dealers may have not kept their compression tester in service since they don't manufacture the RX-8 any longer. A common compression gauge is NOT the proper way to evaluate compression on these particular motors - we have three faces per rotor, thus the need for three separate readings of data per rotor.

 

thank you for the input, Mazda here in Daytona seems to be up on the technology, but apparently on price as well.
