Hi I read on the forum that refered Turtle Ice as one of the better car polish to use for RX8 that are used as daily basis, I was wondering is that thing actually a wax? I just purchased it yesterday and really suprised at the viscosity of the fluid, am I suppose to use a paste wax before applying it or I'm just one big Noob that don't really know the advancement in carcare tech lol. (I'm a noob in car care use to think "Dawn" is just as good and good thing I didn't use it on my 8)

It's a synthetic sealant, although it says polish on the label it isn't a true polish. You can put it on your car w/o any need for a paste wax. Also use car wash soap, not dawn for regular washings of your car.

Using Dawn to wash your car is something some owners do once in a while when they're applying Zaino (it's a different sealant product that is much more involved than turtle wax ice).


Basic car care:
Wash car with car soap, claybar (if needed, and wash afterwards), wax/seal.

Thanks and one more question, what exactly is a clay bar? I've heard of it and seen it many times but always have a thought that they are something like a really really really fine sand paper of sort... well roughly saying it

A Clay Bar is abrasive (that's why you need to keep the surface lubricated while you clay). Claying your car is something that needs to be done only a few times per year depending on how clean it stays. It'll remove the tar and road grime that builds up on your paint over time (and isn't easily removed by a wash).

Claying is a good idea for your first seal/wax of the season if you plan on layering multiple coats on later between washes.

If your car is in relatively good shape paint wise, I'd try Meguiar's Clay Bar as it is a milder abrasive than say, the blue ClayMagic Clay bar. There's a wealth of information at autopia.org...I'd check it out. (Be forewarned, they take detailing quite seriously )

Ice is really only good for keeping the black plastic exterior trim pieces looking good. It's a pretty horrible wax for the paint.

I like Ice. As Coastie cites it's really a synthetic paint finish "sealer" vs. a wax. Very easy to use as there's no residue and you can go right over black plastic/rubberoid parts. You can even use it in direct sunlight, although I've had better results in the shade. For an every day driver it's really very handy. Coupled with a detailing spray ('speed shine') my '8 looks great most of the time.

I do use a high quality carnauba wax a few times a year, especially prior to winter 'storage.' I generally clay bay, using the detailing spray as a lubricant, prior to this 'hard' wax.

ok thanks but... just wondering after applying the ICE should I also apply another layer of Carnauba wax or other way around,(heard that they don't really stay on long in daily conditions ) or ICE alone is enough. Keep in mind I live in Canada. Dead cold with snow around. I just took my car for a wash to get all that salt and crap off.

If Carnauba is not really a viable option for daily driver, can someone refer me to some synthetic wax that has more staying power?

ive used meguires clay bar kit and i like it, but i like the clay bar with the ICE detailer spray after a nice wash, get the car reallly velvety and smooth so when you put your *** on it, it slides off....then i use the ice wax after that... comes out pretty good, best yet.

From what I've read, ICE is good because it's easy to apply and look good.

Bad thing is it doesn't last very long. I don't know this personally, but this is what I've gathered from the various websites I've read about it from people who have used it.

really good info dude....yeah i like to clay and wax once a week, keeps my car lookin new and feeling velvety smooooth, sooo smooth everything slides off....what i like to do is wash, then clay, using ice detailer as my lubricant, then givin it a coat of ice wax, and during the week wiping it down with the detailer...... i swear everytime i go to the meets my car i usaully the cleanest....mines an 04 and it looks better than brand new at times...

I know what you mean dozer. I have a heck of a time getting my cover on, as it slides effortlessly off the smoooth paint.

As far as Ice not lasting long - I use it after almost every wash, with detailing spray between washes, so I wouldn't know!

Alright guys, after much lurking around the forums, I might finally have some info that can be of use to share. My 8 needed a good clay and a wax. It was starting to turn a little dull and had it's share of swirl marks in it. After reading some good and some bad reports of the TurtleWax ICE liquid clay and their ICE polish I went and bought both. Long story short = wast of money. Now I am new to this extent of car care. All my life I just washed my car most of the time, and tried to wax it once a year if I could talk myself into it. Now that I have my 8 (and it's black) I know I need to take better care of it to make the finish last. In hingsight, I should have just bought a standard claybar like a Mequires kit or somerthing, but I liked the idea of the idiot proof ICE liquid clay. Well, it is idiot proof because it really doesn't seem to do anything. It basically looked no different after the liquid clay and polish than it did before I started. I did the whole car with the liquid clay, but I only polished a part of it (with the polish) to see how it came out. I ended up scrubbing my arm off using Mequires gold wax. It was a little hard to wipe off (probably because it needed it badly) but man it looks MUCH better than it did. I just wanted to share my experience so maybe I can save someone the $35 that I spent on the ICE products. I have read many good things about the Mequires NT synthetic wax, and I want to try that stuff next time, but I won't be buying anymore ICE products. TurtleWax does offer a money back guarantee so I think I am going to send this stuff back. Hope this helps.

Biplane, sorry you wasted your time. There are a lot of folks like you who took the plunge and were happy with the rseults.

Next time, go with Meguiar's NTX. I used this on my 14 year old black Lexus and was very pleased with the results. Multiple coats recommended. I hear the new formula, NXT 2.0, is even better.

Bruce, I think I will try the new NXT 2.0 on my next wax. I'm sure it didn't hurt anything by useing the ICE, but it was my fault for buying it to begin with. I read a lot of threads today about people having the same experience that I did. It looks like there are a lot of folks that were not at all impressed with these products, and I should have read up and did a little research BEFORE I bought this stuff. At least it was a good work out for me to scrub all day on it!

I wouldn't use Turtle liquid clay, or anyone else's for that matter. That just logically doesn't seem like it would work very well. Ol' school clay myself. Some things just can't be made easier with good results.

The Ice Polish (sealant) does work quite well for me tho'. I do a hard wax a couple times a year but the rest is Ice, most every wash, with detailing spray in between.

the liquid clay is good for getting off tar, sap and any other crap like that. i even got off the traded paint from a guy that hit my girlfriends 3. the ice polish is ok. im pretty satisfied with it, but its a little weird. for example, as mentioned above it doesnt last very long. i do it every 2 weeks now. im gonna start doing once a week now that im around more. another thing is that the water beads up really well, but it doesnt run off the car. i dont know why this happens, but the water doesnt run off like it would with a carnuba. i dunno. im torn about the stuff. it goes on so easy so i dont mind putting it on alot. it also does make the plastic pieces look great.

Yup, the best part of Ice is being able to go right over plastic pieces. And no wax residue in crevices. I really don't know how long it lasts, as I use it after almost every wash, and that's almost weekly.

Detailing spray does a good job on tar, sap, bugs, etc. I detail the front end right after my evening commute. Only takes a few minutes. An ounce of prevention .....

Ice should be used as a detail, last minute coat. It's merely for looks and does not help the clear coat in any way. Best results (as I have used Ice for years on my Black 8):

Dawn wash, clay bar, POLISH! (use a good light polish, meguirs for example), then a good wax. The NEXT DAY, lightly rinse the car, dry it completely, then apply turtle wax ICE.

NOTE: Ice does not last long in the bottle it comes in, if you bought it last year it's probably bad by now.

Ive heard good things about the ICE tire spray, glass cleaner and car wash.... i use Zaino for the rest.
