I was wondering where you can buy Mazda touch-up paint. Is this something you have to purchase from a dealership or is there somewhere online you can buy it? Got a few dings on my winning blue that need help.

 

Got mine free in the mail from Mazda about six weeks after buying my 8. Several others owners did too.
Your dealer should have it in stock. I would refrain from buying it anywhere else as you may have color matching problems. Unless of course it's original Mazda paint.

I got my free bottle about 6 wks after I bought my 8. I found someone selling 2 botles on ebay for $10 so I bought those too. Can never have too much t/u paint. Now I can paint all kinds of things. :D

 

Free bottle? Is this something everyone gets as a courtesy, or some special offer?

Just decided to go get some white touch up for a chip that happend the other day... haven't gone to dealer yet.. but might wait if this is standard Mazda procedure.

 

yes i got some too in the mail, it appears that Mazda has been sending free touch up paint out to new car buyers.... you could be waiting forever though b/c i'm not sure if they're still doing it (got mine about 5 months ago)

my advice, buy some anyway.... can never have too much if you're planning on owning the car for a good while

There have been some bad experiences with the Mazda touch-up paints.

It is really thick and it changes color. (In my case it was very difficult to apply even with a toothpick, and where I applied it changed from yellow to white over a period of a couple weeks.)

I used http://www.automotivetouchup.com/touch_up_paint.asp and it worked much better.

Their microdabbers work really well.

Their prices are reasonable and I got very good results. (Oh and color match was as good as I could expect)

I bought my 2004 in Jan, 2005 and did get the touch-up paint a month or so later. So they were still sending it out at that time.

By the way, do you guys have any advice on how to get a good result with the touch ups? In my experience with other cars, the paint goes on in a glob, and isn't smooth. I think I'd rather have a chip than a big glob of paint.

I wouldn't even use the Mazda paint IMO.

The stuff I bought above is very thin and can go on in very small amounts.

Question for you Mr.Wiggles. That site you are referring to says that it is "manufactured on a per order basis" so the chances of it not matching on a second or third reorder is far much greater isn't it? At least that would be my understanding.

 

Tiggerlee, use Paintscratch.com if youre worried about matching. They use Mazda's color code to mix the paint.

 

Thx! Not to mention that wiggles stated that what he used was very thin which I would think would be harder to use on vertical surfaces. What is the consistancy of the Paintscratch.com paint? Is it the same as the Mazda touch-up paint?

 

I havent used the paintscratch paint as of yet, however, it is highly recommended on the autopia board.

I like that they mix the paint fresh (unlike the Mazda touch up paint bottles) using the Mazda paint codes, so its a perfect match.

 

Automotive Touch-up also uses the paint code to do color matching.

I have the yellow touch-up paint from Mazda is actually a just a pinch too bright of a yellow (that is before it turned white on me.) The Automotive stuff is spot on.

I gave them my three digit paint code, A-?-?, (I don't remember it exactly, but it is on the doorsill on the driver's side) and wrote in the comments section "lightning yellow (bright)" just as a reference.

I got the paint in less than a week (normal shipping) and it looks great. I will take some pictures of the results, Mazda Vs. Automotive.

Here you go.

The white blob in the center of the first pic is the Mazda touch-up paint. That blob was applied with a toothpick and it still was too much paint. (It didn't look that bad when I first put it on, but now that it has turned white it looks horrible.)

The second pic shows what the Automotive stuff is like. I had another spot that I did better but I couldn't find it. The spot shown needs another coat and some buffing.

But three things are obvious to me, the Mazda stuff changes color, the Mazda stuff is too thick to work with, and I am not a master artisan.
