Restoring Black Plastic Trim on the Rear Bumper

My bumper trim is starting to look white on the exhaust shrouds. I am assuming this is a result of the heat from the exhaust drying out the shrouds. Anyways, I am looking for a product to make them look like new. I have tried Aerospace 303, which works great except on the shrouds, Mother's back to black, and will soon be trying Klasse plastic treatment. I am looking for something that I don't have to apply every week I wash the car because it is time consuming. Will Forever Black trim dye work well on our bumper? I also heard that Black Wow isn't very good. If none of these will really work, would replacing the shrouds be a near perfect match to the rest of the bumper? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Back to Black. I know you've used it before, but it really just takes like 5mins to apply and forget.

05rex8 10-29-2008 10:53 PM

Mine are doing the same thing....I've just accepted the fact that if I want to have aftermarket exhaust, they are not going to be perfect....

I guess I could extend the tips...

I second back to black. It also helps to work it in with some love, in the shade when the surface is cool.

Now if its from exhaust heat its may not be very repairable, maybe some spiffy chrome exhaust finishers, or some new plastic ones as suggested.

That's it. I third that. Now that the election is over worth. Get back to work.

nuke0907 11-05-2008 12:46 AM

you should get them sanded smooth and painted.

Rollinwithrotary 11-05-2008 01:29 PM

Id go with the mother back to black too.

Renesis07 11-12-2008 09:47 AM

Alucard 11-17-2008 02:38 PM

no problem guys... glad to help :)

i actually use a tire gel spray thats meant to make the tires look all black and shiny. Well i tried in on the back plastic trim and it worked wonders. Since its a gel and more oil based it really soaks and smooths on the look and mine is so shiny it almost has a gloss black look to it which looks great against my sunlight silver 8 :)

Same here. When they start to look like they are melting I'll change them out.

MM (Jeff) has them they just burn after time. Wast of moneyz + you cant see them if you have 3" exhaust tips

Haven't really noticed much whitening between washes since I started to use Turtle Wax ICE on my black bits. The shrouds come out looking deep black but not shiny and they stay that why for at least 8 months. It also helps with the water spotting issue on the lips below the fake grills.

I've used ICE with both the stock and my Greddy and all was good. Maybe a combination of Back to Black and ICE would be a good solution. One makes it black the other protects it.

i used 99% alcohol and it never came back, i tryed 70% - 80% and that didnt work, try 99%, its really from the waxs and cleaners that make it like that, you have to strip it off

Jedi54 01-07-2009 11:59 AM

Meguiars NXT has a purple spray bottle that works REALLY well for black parts. Apply a small amount on a cloth or applicator pad and you should be fine.

I'd suggest that you don't have hot tips during the process....

Where do you get 99% Alcohol? Is this household stuff?

lol, can anyone verify this?

ferg 01-08-2009 03:31 PM

take pics

Alucard 01-08-2009 04:31 PM

well ive heard that you can clean up gum with peanut butter, and also remove scratches on cds with peanut butter.... so who knows lol

dothackRAVE 01-09-2009 06:15 AM

It's probably more of a result of peanut butter oil than the peanut butter itself. Oil makes plastics shiny.

extremsprt86 01-09-2009 08:32 AM

the oil is most likely what does the trick, but having it in a nice creamy form makes it easy to put on. ill do a round and put up pix once i get my car back from mazda.

p.s. chunky is killer on a pb&j but for the car stick to creamy, and dont bother trying to use it on the fender vents unless you can take them out to do it.

What would happen if you added jelly..OoO..

FYI, I used Dupli-Colour Bumper Black Vinyl Spray Paint (Satin Black) today and it looks ridiculously amazing.

"Dupli-Color Flexible Bumper Coating - Black, 311G" - Supercheap Auto New Zealand

I took the shrouds off, which gave me an opportunity to fix the broken and cracked 'tabs' that hold the shrouds in place.

I was all prepared to go out and buy two news ones, but these have come up so good, no need!

Carbon8 10-05-2012 02:06 PM

Heat gun, works wonders.

Can you post some pics? Just saw this stuff the other day and it looks like it might be descent.

deanrx8 10-06-2012 07:08 AM

Will post some pics soon.

One thing I will say, you must make sure the shrouds are clean as a whistle before using the dupli-colour, and be sure to shake the bejesus out of the can before spraying. It's a rubberised paint, so if it hasn't mixed properly, when it lands on the surface it can pull away from edges...
As I said, so happy with results, I am now going to do the lower rear bumper with the same stuff to match the newly painted shrouds...

Obviously the light conditions changed overnight so the pictures dont match, but you get the idea.

I'm very pleased with the result.

Nopstnz8 10-17-2012 09:31 AM

^^How was the ease of application?

deanrx8 10-17-2012 05:52 PM

It's a spray can, like spray paint, so application is just like paint. I took my shrouds off, to save masking, cleaned them thoroughly with Isopropyl Alcohol to remove all the road grime, wax etc, let them dry, then hung them and gave them 3 coats, about 20 minutes apart. I let them dry over night before reinstalling. Very straight forward.

bigx5murf 11-10-2012 04:09 AM

Hmm, maybe someone can try just plasti-dip. You can apply it without removing the shroud, and just peel it off the over spray.

I plastidipped mine orange, and it works really well. Just gets dirty pretty quickly cause of the exhaust. Plus, it's had to spray the inside part, but it's possible and it helps protect it.
