Just got a Calif. Car Duster
Stopped by an auto-parts store on the way to work and happened to see one for $10. The last one, so I snapped it up. I think that's a good price.
I took a quick glance at the directions, and I think it said to leave it on a newspaper for 48 hours. What's that for?

Yep, leave it on newspaper or papertowel for 48 hours so that it will absorb the excess parafin wax. Otherwise will leave a film of wax on your car. After 48 hours you will see what I am talking about.

Car duster is an absolute necessity out here in So Cal.
It's so quick and easy! I just take a few minutes to dust it off before I leave the office and my car looks great the whole way home.

Yeah the dusters are great. For those who haven't used them it's a good idea to let the hood
cool off before using it(especially darker colors). The heat from the hood can cause streaking from the dusters baked on paraffin wax.

48 hours gives me time to get it ready for the weekend.
(Of course, I usually wash the 8 every weekend anyway.)

The mini one is great for the interior, the big one is perfect for extending the time between washes. It really gets the dust and pollen off and leaves it shiny without scratching (if you don't wait until it's too dusty, that is).

i have the mini and use it for the interior, works great. I have used the mini on the exterior and seemed to work good as well. Have not been able to find the full sized one yet but still looking, black shows way too much pollen and dust!

I saw a combo pack with the little one and the big one at Costco yesterday for about $11. I was tempted but didn't spring for it. Sounds like a good deal.

Don't bother with the new swiffer auto interior dusters...the things are a pain in the butt to get on the plastic handle correctly and then they flop all ove the place. A waste of money!

Yea, the "seasoning" period is a must, I was a little too eager and used it too soon, and it streaked. Now though, with a quarter-inch of pollen on my car every day, I just run it over the outside in 1-2 mins after work, and the car looks great until the next morning. Won't take off bird crap and tree sap, but the lighter dust is gone. A must, if you ask me.

dusters are generally harmful for paintjobs, imo. Use them with care... Larger dust particles may be fine dirt which will then be dragged across your paint, in which case it iwll leave very fine scratches in your paint, especially noticeable on pristine paint. The RX-8 has a relatively soft coating too, which makes it especially risky.
If you are very particular about that beautiful paint job on your RX8, you might want to reconsider using one.
If you don't see fine swirlmarks after use, you will probably see them over time. But there's always people who swear by them, so use at your own risk. It will do exactly what it was designed to do, which is wipe dust off your dry car.
But personally I stick washing my car once every 2-4 weeks (depending on the weather), to minimize mucking around with the paint. More contact=more chances for scratches.
