Gasoline on paint

The other night I was fueling up and the pumps automatic shutoff was not working. Therefore, when my tank was full the pump just kept pumping and I got gas all over the left, rear of my car. I washed with hand soap and water when I got home. it was either that, laundry detergent, or dish soap and I wasn't sure about using the dish soap.
What harm can the gasoline do to the paint? right now my car only has a thin layer of wax on it. Which of the soaps should I have used? I thought about the dish soap b/c it contains a degreaser, but it also would have removed the wax.
Either way I will be washing it completely today. Please let me know what your opinion is on this. What can the gasoline do and which soap should i use for it?

you're fine. I've done this several times and it didnt hurt anything. Washing it with car wash soap would of been enough. Dish wash soap, because it contains alcohol, removes wax and zaino. Don't forget to add another coat

I did the same thing the other night, and just ran into the store, and bought a gallon of water. I gave the 8 an impromptu bath right there at the pump (you can still do that stuff in SoFla at the end of November). Next morning was a complete wash and 3rd app of zaino. Lookin' good.
