I always wash before doing anything, otherwise I might be grinding dirt into the paint.

I'm **** as hell when it comes to this type of thing. I wipe my wheels clean of brake dust at every stop, etc.

For after day drive care, I use something I started using for my motorcycle. It's called Honda Spray & Polish. It can be used on virtually any surface safely. From interior vinyl, to chrome parts, to plastic, to painted surfaces (anything but glass). Cleans and waxes painted surfaces.

I usually cover my car at night to keep it clean, but before covering it, to prevent scratching, I spray the vehicle with Honda S&P, wipe it off (never scratches, like most "waterless" cleaners) and it is a clean and slick as when I last washed it. Also works great on wheels (and the waxing agent makes wiping wheels later easier).

Another great thing about this stuff is that it works amazingly well on bird droppings, even dried. Just spray it on the dropping, wait 1 minute, then wipe clean, with no risk of scratching. Really good stuff, available from any Honda motorcycle dealer...

Here's what i do to quick detail my car. First, grab to 2 MF towels, a bucket full of fresh water and your favorite quick detailing spray. Soak one MF towel in the bucket of water and wring excess water. spray your quick detailing spray on one panel and wipe the panel with the wet mf towel to loosen and remove dirt and quickly wipe it with a dry MF towel to dry. Make sure you dip your wet MF towel in the bucket very panel to make sure you remove loose dirt that might have stuck in between the weaves. Also make sure you fold the towels in 1/4 so you can flip it around when it gets heavily soiled. hope this helps.
