ClearBra

ok . I am doing it.. I will be taking my 8 down to Irvine to get a Clear Bra installed! It will also be de-badged and my UK rear lip spoiler will be installed. I will have the whole front clip coverd with the clear bra and the mirrors, rocker panels , and the roof of the car. , Also the top of the rear bumber ! it will cost me about $1800 bucks for the Clear Bra and looks like around 500 for the debadge and spoiler install. Thanks to God of Thunder :0) My new uk spoiler has a fresh coat of paint .. The spoiler will also be covered in Clear Bra. SO .. Ill post pics of this .. it wont happen untill the end of the month and I have to leave my car there for about a week while they do all this work. The debadgeing process will mean that the holes have to pe filled and painted. The paint needs to cure fo r24 hrs before they will install the Clear Bra.

Anyone out there think i should make them wait longer than 24 hrs ?

Wish me luck ..

And send me a tampon to plug the whole in my wallet

debadged = removing the mazda badges like the mazda logo from the front, the MAZDA and RX-8 lettering on the rear, etc.

Hey thew:

For the uninitiated- What exactly is a clear bra- My mental image is a clear car bra but I could be way off- Especially as you mentioned the mirrors and roof etc... What is it made from and how is it applied/installed.

Cheers

Most shops doing clear bras use the 3M Scotchcal vinyl film, it's designed specifically for this purpose. There are several outfits that do templates for different cars - I had a local installer for www.xpel.com . There are quite a few threads here discussing clear bras - search for my user name and 'xpel' and you'll turn up several discussions. I've had it on one car for over 2 years, and on my RX-8 since July.

Regards,
Gordon

BTW dont bother with the clear bra on the top of the back bumper- worry about the bumper itself, and have them wrap that with a thicker material all the way around the bumper. I have had at least 1 bumper tap since having it installed and have had no scrapes. You can see all my install pics, including the rear bumper if you search here for "Monster coatings"

Hey RockBlocker.. how much srinkage do you see with your stuff ? and do you have lots of bubbals that have to cure out over a day or so?
I am just asking because i got my 8 back today and the guy told me that the bubbels and weirdness would all go away in a day or so. Unfortunatly the guy did not have the 48 " product cause his supplyer screwd him.. so hes going to redo most of my car. at my house next week !

Anyway now that i see it.. I am not that impressd unless the weirdness goes away compleatly. I mean on some cars i see kindof a marbleing effect . Like the Clear stuff is makeing the Orange peel in the clearcoat way stand out ??

just wanted your thoughts.

The product should not shrink at all in terms of getting smaller. The product does take a couple of weeks to cure out. But sounds like you have nothing to worry about since he is redoing your car next week.

I would be more concerned as to why he using 48 inch stock to do your car. That means hadn cutting on your car and that is the real scary thing if you ask me.

You should not see many if any bubbles when the kit is installed on the car. Sometimes there will be a few, but they shouldnt be obvious to you without looking closely.

Here is a pic of a car I did last summer in 90 degree weather. It had been done for less than an hour and the whole front end it done.

If you can post some pics I would be happy to look at them and you give more input.

Hes using the 48" 3m stuff cause hes covering most of the car. Entire front Clip. All doors, Rocker panels, REarfender, Rear bumper, Front half of roof,

He got all the stuff done that did not require the 48" roll .. and yes,, hes cutting all over the car !!! very scary but! so far thats all good.. HE has this cool stuff you lay down under the bra then you pull it through and it cuts the bra!,, but he was using a razor just above the paint !.... That was the main reason i wanted the big job, less cutting cover the whole hood...

anyway right know it looks like hell. Very bubbeld in most spots and he said that it would shrink at the edges over the next day or so and normallly he would have the client come back in about 3 months to do a final touch up. Ie trim, and if nessacary reapply new peices to problam areas. As well as terat it with 303.

I will park it out in the sun tommorw and look at it friday when i get back from work.

p.s he did a temp job to the front ie, Full bra style install , halfway up the hood. He wanted to make sure i had some protection before i take it on a road trip.. if he cant get the stuff by then. Says the supplyer has a bad bunch of stock and is waiting for 3m to replace it.
