OK, need some info and I've searched and read all of this I can. I have an '04 6spd and I am interested in running some local STX events on the cheap. I've been out of autocross for about 3 years and last year I ran a Miata with a friend at the Peru Tour and realized how much I miss it. Previously I was nationally competitive in a DS Mazdaspeed Protege.

Here is my question:
Will 245/40/18 tires fit on stock wheels w/o rubbing?

What is the street tire RX-8 owners prefer?

I've noticed a lot of people are going 17", but I have an 18 month old child that takes all my money now, so I was hoping just to mount some street tires and have fun. Maybe hit a tour?

I don't think STX prepping the RX8 is particularly cheap mainly due to the cost benefit of making more power. Most competitive drivers end up having to go pretty expensive on the suspension to make up for the lack of torque/power upgrades available.

 

I don't plan on prepping anymore, if I want to be competitive, I'll run my friend's max prepped Miata, I just want to get street tires and not have to change them at events. I completely understand the expense of prepping ST cars, that's why I used to run stock, and that still required race tires, extra wheels. I just want to show up and run for fun.

 

Well if 285's will fit on the stock wheels than i'm pretty sure 245's will fit just fine without any rubbing...

Check out the Hankook RS3 or the Dunlop Star Specs.

 

Cindy, 245/40/18 would be the size you'd want. And yes, they fit just fine on the stock 18x8" wheels w/o any rubbing.
Agreed on those two tires, however, if she just wants to show up and drive (and will use these autocross tires on the street), I say go for the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs. Great in the wet and dry. The Hankook RS-3's are great in the dry, but only so-so in the wet.

 

Ugh, still trying to find a non-sunroof white RX-8. It's like trying to find a needle in a corn field. Anyone thinking about going SP with me this year?

 

Thanks! I will be driving these tires all summer, change them in winter. And I do drive my baby in the car, so wet traction is important. I was leaning towards Dunlop or Bridgestone. Dunlop is probably more affordable.

Maybe not at first as it'll take some time to tune in suspension settings since I'm going a bit of a different route this time, and will be my first time on R comps too, you know? But probably more towards the middle of the year I'd really like to. We'll have to see! Current specs I have in mind are posted on the blog under project 2 - Serenity if anyone is curious.

 

IIRC, the Delaware NT is in June. Depending on where you are development-wise, might be worth bring it out to run against some of the best.

Depending on whether I keep my RX-8 beyond the end of this year or not, some 18x10's and 285's will be in my future.

 

Managed to drop off about 65 lbs total so far with a few more things left to do. Not sure that it will break 2700# now. The full size battery setup weighed less than the manufacturers spec, so I only saved 38# rather than 45#, leaving me another 7 lbs to make up else where. Think I will only get another 10 lbs or so which would leave me near 2715# on a low tank ....

Correct. They are listed in the Mazda accessories catalog for the RX-8.

On another note, what pressures would you guys recommend starting out with on some 295 Hoosiers on 18x9.5's? I've raced on Hoosiers before but never messed with pressures or owned a pair.
