Selling my RX8 Race Car (NASA PTD / TTD)

Hey guys. Was a long time contributor to this forum but have been silent the past few years as life changes have taken me away from racing. Finally selling my well loved RX-8 Race Car. It needs a motor rebuild but everything else is great. Asking $5000. I'm going to post this in the for sale section but wanted to let the racers know about it was well. I'm going to leave this on the forums for a week or so before I put in on bring a trailer, racing junk etc... I'd like it to got to a good home and would love for a fellow rotary head here to have it. I have a ton of pics I can send you. E-mail me at magnusracing@aol.com as I don't check PMs often. Care is in San Diego. Here is the write up:I'm selling my 2005 Mazda RX-8 Race Car. The motor will need to be rebuilt and it has been parked in my garage for a couple years but everything else is great. The car has been a real work horse. I built it into a race car in 2008 and raced it through 2017. It has probably been in well over 100 races. I primarily raced it with NASA in the PTD and TTD class but it also did Grand Prix racing and Road Rally in Mexico. It was registered for street use until last year when the airbag recall became mandatory (who knows where the original steering wheel is...) so now it is registered as "Non-Operation". I have a clean CA Title.

Although it had a few small bumps and bruises amazingly the car was never crashed. Nothing worse that some "rubbing is racing" flaws and wind blasting of the paint. Perfect frame.

The sad thing is that the motor was just rebuilt a couple years ago and I intended to race it again. However, the engine builder got very ill and could not physically finish the work so he had somebody finish it "under his direction". Well... something was done wrong because it runs, but very poorly. Something is up with the compression. But the motor is not hurt so it could be a very inexpensive fix parts wise. I keep telling myself I'm going to pull the motor again and fix it but my lifestyle has changed and now it has been sitting in my garage for two years. I have to admit to myself I'm probably not going to race again anytime soon. Someone needs to actually race this thing - it's not doing any good in my garage.

Consistent NASA PTD podium finisher. Some track records. 1st place regional several time. Did Nations a few times but never managed better than 2nd. I blame the driver.

This will come with lots of space parts. 6 brand new race compound tires ($1500 value) and two extra sets of wheel with scrub tires. Spare 5.12 ratio rear diff (this ratio no longer available from Mazda Competition) with OSGiken limited slip. Extra set of oil coolers. Extra racing clutch. Plus lots more I'm probably forgetting.

Built to NASA racing specs with a stout professionally built roll cage, fire system, kill switch, nets, seats, belts etc. I'm sure the belts are expired.

Some of the mods include:

1) Long Tube header (stock exhaust manifold available as well)

2) Rotary specific racing muffler

3) Evo 3 driver and Evo 2 co-driver seat

4) Ohlins Racing Suspension ($3500+ new)

5) Custom Ron Davis Racing Dual Radiator (HUGE, not the small Mazda Comp one)

6) Mazdaspeed intake (stock airbox available as well)

7) Higher ratio 4.77 rear diff from Series 2 RX-8)

8) Slightly stronger transmission from Series 2 RX-8

9) Super light weight flywheel and racing clutch.

10) APR Carbon Fiber Rear Wing (over a $1000 part)

Depending on how you set up it this car has made up to 228hp to the rear wheels. It usually weighs in at around 2800lbs but can be made quite a lit lighter if you want to race it in a faster class.

Many more small things I'm probably forgetting.

Car is located in San Diego. I will deliver for free within 150 miles if you want.

Although it's well loved this car is solid and I hope it finds a good home.

Please contact me with any questions.

FWIW my $5000 asking price is what the Ohlins coil overs and 6 new race compound tires included with sale would cost on their own. Haha. Racing... what a great way to burn money. But so fun!

Wow, looks like a great deal. If I only had a place to keep it ... is that the S2 or an S1 engine?

Yeah, I think it's a good deal. If the motor did not need a rebuild I'd ask significantly more. I will probably ask more in a couple weeks when I list it on other websites but I wanted to give my fellow forum members the first shot at a good price.

To answer some questions I've had by e-mail:

1) Cage was built by "Midnight Oil Motors" in San Diego. Very quality and strong.
2) Suspensions bushing are still rubber but Mazdaspeed Comp units. Motor Mounts and diff mounts are Mazda Comp parts too.
3) The 4.77 rear diff in it currently is unmodified. The 5.12 diff I have on the shelf has a OSGiken unit in it.
4) Brakes are stock - always found them to work beautifully in all conditions. I do run racing brake pads and I have a box of spare racing pads to provide as well.
5) Steering wheel is by Momo and has a quick release
6) It has a chase cam video system installed - but replace this with a GoPro or something else modern and be happy - chase cam sucks by current standards
7) The ABS works. I disabled the stability control system because it sucks on the track. I suppose you could enable the stability control again if you want.
8) Last I drove it - which was two years ago - the car would start and run and could be driven but runs poorly. I was able to drive it onto the trailer for loading. I did a lot of messing around with it to make sure it was not some other issue causing it to run poorly. I'm 98% certain the motor itself has a compression issue. If you add some oil to the motor to help seal up the combustion chambers for a bit it runs better. I think maybe the apex seal springs were put in wrong. Could potentially be a very easy fix but I can't make any promises.
