i had one transmission failure but it was 4th gear synchro and shift fork. i never took it a part to see how bad the damage was. i replaced it with another used s1 tranny because it was cheap and easy to find. but if i could have found an s2 tranny for a decent price quickly, i would have done it.

When my S1 tranny failed, I switched to an S2 tranny. It has taken significant abuse… more so after I switched to a 5.125:1 R&P

I haven’t run the car for a while but the S2 tranny ran 4 seasons without a glitch. No oil cooler but frequent gear oil changes.

lower gears should make it easier on the transmission, UNLESS you are using the downshift as a braking mechanism

Apparently this NC Miata 6-spd gearset was released in February, the question is will it fit in the S2 RX8 6-spd?

listed at ~$2,750 on Mazda Motorsports, so a pretty good price considering the usual aftermarket alternatives.

Which the NC 3rd gear ratio is better than the S2, but that would prevent it from being used in the RX8 for certain classes. And I’m assuming it has the same OE NC ratios since none are listed. Also being a Motorsport part, you don’t have to be a Mazda Motorsports team member to purchase it. They won’t ship outside the USA though.

Competition Spec MX-5 6-Speed Gearset

Mazda Motorsports remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Spec MX-5 racers. As the SMX class welcomes new drivers transitioning from both karting & Spec Miata, and with aging vehicles posing challenges in parts procurement, Mazda Motorsports has introduced a motorsports edition of the 6-speed gearset tailored specifically for 2006-2015 MX-5s. This initiative ensures that racers of Spec MX-5s can sustain the longevity of their race cars on the track for years to come.
The motorsports transmission gear sets boast several noteworthy advantages:
  1. Enhanced Strength: Crafted from a high-strength 9310 alloy, the gear sets exhibit heightened durability and resistance to wear and tear. This alloy upgrade strengthens the transmission so it can endure the demanding rigors of racing, delivering reliable performance under extreme conditions.
  2. Improved Gear Design: Mazda Motorsports has introduced an enhanced gear tooth root design, optimizing load distribution to minimize stress concentrations and enhance overall gear strength. This design modification allows the transmission to handle higher torque levels and shock loads, providing greater reliability and longevity.
  3. Consistency and Tolerances: The manufacturing process for the motorsports gear sets prioritizes enhanced consistency and tighter tolerances. This meticulous approach ensures that each gear set adheres to stringent quality standards, ensuring precise, reliable pairing and meshing of the internal components of the transmission system. Racers can confidently expect consistency in gear engagement, wear, and accurate shifting, thereby enhancing their overall driving experience.
  4. Improved Oiling: The motorsports transmission incorporates enhanced oiling paths and routing for better lubrication and cooling of the gears, reducing wear friction and heat buildup. Additionally, a splined collar with oil grooves, facilitating lubrication between the countershaft and splined gears, has been implemented. This optimized oiling system contributes to prolonged component life, ensuring optimal transmission performance in demanding racing conditions.
  5. Enhanced Gear Treatment: As part of the manufacturing process, the gears in the motorsports transmission undergo shot-peening and cryogenic treatment. Shot-peening increases surface hardness, improving resistance to fatigue and enhancing overall gear strength. Cryogenic treatment involves subjecting the gears to extremely low temperatures, further enhancing their durability and wear resistance.
By offering this upgraded gear set, Mazda Motorsports reiterates its commitment to supporting both current and new racers in Spec MX-5. With enhanced strength, improved gear design, consistent manufacturing, optimized oiling, and advanced gear treatment, these transmission upgrades provide assurance to racers and empower them to continue savoring the excitement of racing with confidence.
confidence.
