Rx8 Track data analysis with GT wing

Every wonder what GT wing will react at Track day ? for sure it look racier but some say it useless because it creat too much drag for some low HP car like RX8.
I did a back to back testing on my Rx8 with same set of tire(wingless 2 heat cycle GT wing 3th heat cycle) . same suspension setting. same weather

Myth Gt wing will create too much drag will slow car down
the answer is both right and wrong. From datalogger it does slow car down a bit on straigh, but with more down force on rear axle you can brake much deeper then wingless condion. so at the end my top speed with GT wing is slighly faster then wingless

Myth is not nessceary to have GT wing with RX8 since the handeling already super
the answer is , with GT wing car become much more predi and so much easier to drive at limit, Is much easier to have best lap from it

Myth GT wing only work on high speed
the answer is wrong. even with 1600mm wing, i feel car rear end get more stable even in 70Km ish corner

Man, your car is beautiful. GT wings are hard to pull off but it works here.

As for results, I would have gone back and done a wingless run after running with the wing or done multiple wingless runs, to demonstrate that the effect is not just you feeling more confident and braking deeper. Your delta T's aren't so large that they're necessarily outside natural variance, and you're comparing to just one wingless run, which was also your first one, right?

Thanks~ I think Car look good in stance and in action

I have done few hounder lap on wingless run. some time just even little confident can make big impact on lap time. that is how i feel with GT wing
at first lap. i was like man i can really brake so late into corner . and not worry about anyting . and the rear really get plant down with wing. no more
rollover understeer without wing

I drove this ( caterham) on day before of RX8 ( i did a back to back Track day) so i was abit lazy on my RX8, thus no closing window and no lift up shift
i even brake un consistant too and the RE71RS lap time with wing is on its third heat cyle too

The wingless run is from my earlier track day, at that time my 295/30/18 RE71RS is at sec heat cycle

There's so much inconsistency in the data that it's not possible to conclude the wing is doing anything.

At the very minimum you'd want to do an A-B-A comparison with several laps in each configuration. Say 10 laps wingless, throwing out the fastest and slowest laps and averaging the other 8, repeat with the wing, then repeat without the wing to control for improving your driving, controlling for conditions, etc. Then compare your average minimum speeds in various corners and your maximum speed at the end of the straight(s).

It looks like you just picked out your fastest lap without the wing and your fastest lap with it and declared victory.

Mm I get ur point
But ur point
Is easier say then done~ and u are talking about
Like testing is free or on runing similuater , without any real world experience
With more then 200 lap without wing in this track , and 20 years experience of road race
i can feel the different right away, and adjust driving style right away to accomplish the benefit of wing
and if u bother
Do look my chat u can see my ideal lap is almost same to my lap time , that mean I am
A very consistent driver and know the car very well

So conclusion like I said before , wing do slow u down on straight, but u can have similar top speed by brake later into corner , and with some corner as slow as 55mile ish u can feel benfit of GT wing

I don't know why some of u are so aggressive on GT wing , clearly I am not some stubid ricer or poser show off some nice Jdm eye candy , and I am not selling any thing too , so peace and enjoy tracking~

I don't think I'm being "aggressive?"

Just looking at the first set of charts you posted, the "with wing" speed trace dips lower than the red trace, indicating either you biffed the corner or ... something else? But either way the car was slower in that corner with the wing than without.

Looking at some of the other charts, the throttle position trace is kind of all over the place which doesn't indicate confidence to me, but it exists with and without the wing which is why I suggested multiple laps averaged with the outliers thrown out.

To sum up ur testing theory wrong
No street base track car or DOT tire can go more then 5 lap before falling on its performance

If driver get fastest lap after 5 lap lap that usually mean their are not familiar with track or car
Of course this theory is base on driver have more then enough experience on what is he doing

With wing is Blue, lap time was .2 slower
Due to3 reason , first I was a bit tired from driving Caterham day before , sec this is not grid by lap event so I am taking it easy , third Re71RS on its third heat cycle , so grip not as good
But with wing blue line is clearly faster in most of corner

So next season with newer tire and different suspension setting , I have confidence I can really get the lap down even more

Okay, so the wing slowed the car down? Sounds like an excellent mod.

But u can brake deeper into corner
And extra down force made up the corner exit speed even more ~ that reflect to the sector time if u like to see the Delta difference

I would have expected your straight line mph to drop a little from drag and be higher though the turn. I didnt notice that, though im on my phone so hard to see. Ill try and look on a computer later.

The speed was noticeable slower on 3th gear
But since with Wing i Brake in deeper
So overall top speed is the same
Corner speed is faster with wing too

so just making sure I understand this correctly; it’s just a rear wing on/off exercise without any other changes attempting to optimize it?

.
Try to do any adjustments on third heat cycle tire
Some time will get more confuse
Next year , along with new tire will swap stiffer spring too ~

generally when you add aero then the spring rate needs to increase to take advantage of it. Which you must not be adding that much rear downforce because it would be throwing the balance off without an appropriate front dam/splitter to compliment it. That’s not so easy to do in a street car since the splitter lip needs to be around 2”/51mm to the road surface to function properly.

The hood looks neat, is that a custom vent job done by you or is the hood purchased from a manufacturer?
