opinions on wheels

should i get rid of my wheels, get light weight and swap out tires per use?

or save up even more money, and get another set of tires and lightweight wheels for track only? which would save me more money?

i want to hear it from you guys, thanks!

Depending on what you want to go with Tirerack has their trmotorsport wheel in 18x8 for 179 a piece at 20lbs each thats a killer deal, or buy a second set of oe with sticky tires

If you don't care about looks for your track wheels, you can get the super cheap Hot Wheels Sixty-Eight from Discount tire in 17x9 offset 45 for $182 shipped. They weigh 20lbs a piece. Spin9k has used them on the track with no issues. 17" tires are always going to be cheaper than 18's so that's another benefit. http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...504&wd=17&rw=9

I just received the Enkei RPF1s in 18x8. I'll be using these for street and track with the stock Dunlops until they wear out. Then perhaps the Star Spec.

I use another set of stock wheels with snows for Nov - March.

Ummm... What are you planning on doing on the track? A couple HPDEs, a single weekend, a skip barber school? Do you live in a climate with snow, an average climate, or a dry climate?

Without any of that info it's kinda difficult to help.

I'm a big fan of light-weight wheels--my Miata has 6.5-lb wheels in the summer. But don't waste them as track only wheels. Provided they're strong enough, I think a great deal of the benefit of light-weight wheels is experienced on rough, bumpy, hilly public roads rather than on very flat well groomed track surfaces. On such roadways, you'll experience much better rough road traction and a more comfortable ride. The acceleration and braking advantages will be there as well as on the track but these advantages are rather minimal.

Depends. Are you doing poser^h^h^h^h^htrack days or are you competing. If you are doing track days why spend the money? If you are competing that's a different story. At least if you are so good that a couple of tenths are the difference between a national championship and being just another loser then yes. Or if you are filthy rich and have no worries about cash just trade in the RX8 on a new Modena.

Yeah, if you're just a poser doing track days, why spend the money on expensive tires or lighter wheels? Heck, why buy those expensive brake pads? In fact, why push the car hard at all? It's not like you're actually racing, and you'll save a lot of money if you just don't push as hard. I recommend driving at no more than about 5/10ths, and you won't need any of that expensive crap at all. After all, you're not racing.

Save your money. You can't get good $$ for used oem wheels, anyway. Ultimately, you'll be happier if you have a second set of wheels with your race tires mounted up...imho, of course.

There are several threads about wheels in this forum. Mazda actually puts on relatively light OEM wheels. ~21#-22# depending on the supplier. The TRMotorsport C2 20# $172(each)+shipping and the Rota P1 ~19# $750(set) including shipping are two of the less expensive semi-light options now. For the cash flush TireRack has the Volks CE30 16.5# 44 offset(ideal) $779(each!!!).
