That's a very popular wheel for STX WRXs in a 17x8 size.

http://www.good-win-racing.com/miata...ing%20RPF1.jpg

If I decide to run STX in 2010, I'd strongly consider 17" wheels only if the competitive ST tires are offered in a 265 width in this wheel size.

refresh my memory... the rules for stx wheels are? (too lazy to re-check on scca)

max 9" wide wheels for 2 wheel drive
max 265 tires

PBlue 11-03-2008 01:51 PM

dia and offset open?

MilesJ 11-03-2008 02:13 PM

Yes, in STX diameter and offset are open.

I got used set of 245/45R17 RE01R's for crazy cheap so I'm thinking about finding a cheap set of EVO VIII Enkei 6-spoke wheels to start (17x8, ET38, 67mm CB). They'll work well for track wheels once I get a real set of STX wheels.

Are you doing a full STX conversion? Watch out for Cline's BMW -- it's FAST!!!!!!!

Imp 11-03-2008 02:18 PM

Will all these wheels clear the RX8 brakes?

MilesJ 11-03-2008 02:47 PM

Cline is fast, he'll be a good benchmark for me as I buildup the car.

More wheel options.

Although quite expensive compared to some of the other options.

BBS RGR (forged, 17.2 lbs) 17x9 ET42

For 17" wheels I think that the $250, 16lb, 17x9 Enkei RPF1 is the way to go for STX.

For 18's the Volk RE30 is the wheel I'd be dreaming of. Forged, 18x9 ET40, 17.5lbs and $796each.

Right now I'm also looking at the last of the 19.2lb Kosei K1TS 18x9 ET20 wheels from Tire Rack for $200 each. Not sure if they'll fit but it's a hell of a deal if they do.

Budget STX'ers can get the ASA AR1 18x9 (ET45 23.8lbs) $174 each.

Is that offset correct? ET20??? If so, those will stick out significantly from the sides of the car.

MilesJ 11-03-2008 03:19 PM

ET20 is right. If they fit it would be nice but I'm not sure if they will. I know TeamRx8 ran 18x10.5 ET43 wheels and these 18x9 ET20 wheels will stick out the same amount as a 18x10.5 ET40. Tire profile when mounted and the 3mm difference is what I am worried about.

The tire size is the same, though. Team was running a 265 Yokohama, and if I recall it was a tight fit. The difference between +20 and +43 is almost a full inch, so you'd have to gamble that a 265 on a 9" rim is a full 2" narrower than a 265 on a 10.5" rim. I just don't see it happening.

I think Team tried different wheels - not sure if these were the ones you mentioned:

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=77751&stc=1

If the fit is close you could always legally roll the inside fender lip.

Cito 11-03-2008 06:21 PM

Unless there are 265/17's out there, the 18x9's are going to be the way to go.

Now finding them is hard. All sorts of 18x8.5 and 18x9.5's out there. Its like they made the required size 18x9 just to make it more difficult and expensive...I know they didn't....but....

Besides wheels, any thoughts on coilovers, sways, intakes, etc.?

Here's what I ended up getting.
Weds Sport TC005
17X9 +42
15.8lbs

They were on close out on tire rack for $240, normal price $370. I'm not sure if they are still there or not.

MilesJ 11-04-2008 07:51 AM

Those are his 18x9.5 Enkei's the wheels I was talking about are the SSR Comp-H 18x10.5

The TC005 is one of my favorite wheels of all time. It's a shame Tire Rack didn't pick up the wheel WedSport replaced it with, the TC105N.

From what I can tell, about 22 pounds each.

Might be more like 23.5 pounds. Its a bit of surprise given that they look so much like the good ole SSR's.

Speaking of STX wheels and tires. On sccaforums. Wheels and tires that should fit (may or may not need hub centers masaged).

One issue with 17s is I don't think they'll clear big brake kits on the market. This might be important for a STX build as BBKs are a good source of weight savings.
