Hey Mike,

I just use my back seats but there's another option for transporting tires. While it'll impact fuel mileage you can put a roof rack on and carry them on top. I saw a post over a year ago from a guy who was happy with the results. You might try to searching the site.

Being technically illegal and actually being likely to be protested are two different things. It's very unlikely that you'd get protested over something like this, and as ULLLOSE wrote, even if you were, it's unlikely that you'd receive a meaningful penalty.

While I wouldn't recommend ever intentionally being in violation of the rules, there is sometimes a difference between the intent and the letter of the law.

To answer the original question, I have the delan hitch for almost 2 years with no problem. I use a small trailer with a tire rack for 4 tires in the front and a tool box in the back. Weight distribution is the key. With my tool box in the trailor and 4 tires plus assorted other goodies the tongue weight is maybe 40 lbs estimate. little compression of springs and pulls great at 80+

Most of the ones I have seen start out as a Kit from a place like Northern Tool
You get some plywood, bolt the tool box and rig a way to keep the tires from moving seems simple.

I will have to reply on where my came from on Monday. receipts are in the office. It was from a trailer manufacturer north of Orlando, Florida. Problem is that they used to ship and now they won't. Tongue on trailor slides back into frame when not in use so storage is just the frame area itself. At a little over 1000 it definately wasn't the Norther Tool unit.

If desired, I can take pictures for someone to give to a trailer shop. I am sure they could easily duplicate. For me there was no option, but to get a trailer. Back seat is hard to get to with a roll bar and cross members.

I built mine using a cheapo Harbor Freight trailer...arrived CKD, I bolted it together, bought some 3/4" plywood to make a platform, found a Rubbermaid box at OSH for about $25 (through bolted, with large fender washers inside the box), and made the wheel retaining uprights (which you can't see) out of galvanized pipe stuff. It works great, I've logged a few thousand miles and even the crap bearings have been holding up fine. Total cost was right at $300 or so.

Present tow vehicle's scheduled for some over due maintenance, so I'd like to check out what you come up with for the RX-8. You going to be at the 22-OCT Slush event?

Hi Barry,
I'm not going to install a hitch, at the present time. I'm setting the RX8 up for BS and will either just throw the tires in the back or drive on them to local events, for now. For bigger events, I'll put the car on the trailer and tow behind the RV.

I plan on being at the Slush event, but am probably going to be helping Jason get his Elise dialed in for ASP during that series. Of course, with our site issues, presently, we may not have any real chance to run the Elise (it isn't really a Candlestick friendly set up), in which case I'll be driving the RX8 in BS.

Is that hitch available or was it totally custom? I only want it for a bike rack and I think it looks great there.

If you mean a bicycle, they already have racks made to fit on the trunk for that.

do what i did. I baught an 07 dodge ram with a hemi to tow my bikes. ahhaha
of course im poor now but friends throw me cash for me to take their bikes to the track with mine. thus I make payments with that lol.
