I'm trying to work on the chart but am running into conflicting info on the S2 transmission gear ratios. Mazdatrix lists one thing, this thread shows something else : https://www.rx8club.com/series-ii-technical-trouble-shooting-160/2009-rx-8-transmission-gear-chart-discussion-135710/, and the 2009 Mazda service highlights is different as well. I'm leaning towards going with the service highlights book.

Can anyone CONFIRM the ratios on the S2?

Forget it, I'm going with the 2009 Service Highlights Manual. Will post up results soon.

Try this calculator:

http://precisionsite.com/auto-x/tools/

Change variables 'til your heart's content. It even has the S1 and S2 specs pre-loaded.

For example, in an S2 on stock tires with a 5.12, you will do 74mph @4000rpm in 6th.

Oh that's a good one! Guess I don't need to post anything up with that one available! That website does indeed list the same gear ratios as the 2009 service highlights too.

Nice!

if you went with a 17 inch wheel and tire with overall diamether of 24.7 or so for example. it would be equal to a about a 4.9-5.0 diff? Guessing there.
Your center of gravity would be lower and more than likely the rotating mass would be lighter- remember this helps with braking responsivness also. Then if you decide that is not enough then do something more labor intensive. Oh 17 inch tires are much cheaper and more easily available also.
This engine builds a LOT of heat in the higher rpms. For tracking I would advise to not exceed 8.2K rpm in most cases. Dont routinly go to 9K. The engine is not prepared to handle that consistantly. You still may have to do some pretty serious cooling system upgrades. For Gods sake get some gauges first
The gearing ratios on the 09 trans is great between 3-4-5. There is too big of a jump between 5-6th gear for me. I dont think you would like having to use 6th gear?
