I went back to ICAR last week and I pulled off a 1:56.9 with a passenger. I felt like I could push a bit more and get a better time, but then again I didn't want to break something and ruin my day. I don't have a lap timer and I go there to have fun, so setting a hot lap wasn't a priority.
here's a video of that lap around the track. I was being chased by an S2000 which was a bit slower, but made me work hard to keep my lead. I'll be back there on October 8th if anyone here wants to join me |
Ahh! Finally! Locals!!
All results since my last post added to the thread start. @Cdnrx8, what clubs do you run with? @Lookalike: where do I sign up for Oct 8? I haven't run at all this year, would like to fit something in. I know I'm doing something wrong at ICAR, would be nice to work on it. @JakeKaminskisRacing: what's the story with that Starlet in your result sheet? 80's Starlet or the 90s hot hatch? |

Although I would wait a bit before registering. This year they haven't given any incentives to sign up early, and with the crappy weather we had all summer, I will wait 2 days before the event to make sure it doesn't rain. Actually you can even register the morning of the event now that I think about it. Do you remember which corner gives you more trouble than other? Would it be by any chances... the infamous carousel? :P https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...57561ee382.jpg |
Oh and I just saw the added time you put for me, thanks! but my RX8 isn't really stock, lol.
I have RS3, DTC 60, Bilstein PSS, Hotchkis Sway bars, Koyo S2 rad, AutoEXE Catback I also have a few other non performance enhancing mods: FAL 420 fans (to fit the S2 rad), BHR coils, S2 fuel pump, RX8performance AST, SOHN, Battery in Trunk, DEFI gauges. |

Jake, What are you running for your line? You must be running a great line to turn 1:53 on a stock RX8 at Gingerman.
I average 1:53/1:54 on NT01s, Ohlin coilovers, and Hawk StreetRace pads; ...and I carried passengers all weekend. Personal best is 1:50, but not consistently (traffic during HPDEs plays a factor, lol). I should be able to dip into the 1:4x territory but you must be killing the line! Sorry for the late reply bud, should have hit me up with a PM. I have plenty of experience on Gingerman so the line is pretty dialed in for me. Just adjusting to the limits of the RX8 in factory trim on "ok" tires. I am losing a bunch of time due to the factory alignment and lack of negative camber. The Riken Raptor tires are definitely not a fan of sustained heavy G loads, primarily in off camber corners. Soon as the front sets, it washes out due to the poor contact patch design. I knew the tires I bought were cheap and not the greatest but for the price they're f*cking awesome! My setup is about as basic as it can get. 2004 RX-8 GT BHR Coil Packs 245/40/18 Riken Raptor Hawk HPS Pads Motul RBF 600 |

Hey Loki I haven't done any serious track work for a while but at the time I ran with the Quebec BMW club and affiliates. At Shannonville I have a friend who organizes something once a year. Always had a good time. Guys are they still doing lapping on mondays at St Eustache and I bleieve they were doing Tuesday night at Icar. If I can get my solenoid valves fixed I'll have to consider joining you guys on October 8. at Icar.
Btw great thread. I'm in for Oct 8 :) |

Just got back from Mid-Ohio, ran on club configuration with the chicane. Personal best was 1:55:20 in novice group. Could have done 1:53 if there was no traffic.

Am I hearing some ignition break up at high load/max speed conditions? I thought it was maybe the sound of VDI reverberation between the two rotors? I'm running the T-rex ignition kit... Maybe I should just buy some OEM ignition coils and wires and see if that does anything? My last couple of dynoes have been weak on the top end (>7500 rpm)... |

What are you tuning with? Any ignition dwell changes?

OEM flash. I just ordered Mazda OEM coils (latest and greatest) and wires, and new NGK plugs. Let's see if that makes a difference. I've heard those coils have much improved longevity. |
Typically I recommend increasing dwell on the D585 style coils. However you’d likely be ok with factory dwell using the IGN-1A Mercury/AEM coils, though I’d still prefer to adjust it. The factory dwell table starts decreasing from around 5000 all the way to 9000. At max rpm it’s too low for most coils imo. OE coils are a fine option too. I recommend keeping a sparkplug style coil spark tester around and make it part of a regular maitenance check routine.

I'm interested to hear how you got on at LS? That seems to be a "diva" track for me :-D I got a 1:49.00 with my girlfriend in the car. I didn't get much seat time because my driver side wheel bearing went out after the first session. Luckily, skip's auto was able to ship the part down from Fremont in 3 hours, which allowed me to get back on the track for the last session. Lesson learned, bringing a spare bearing with me to my next track days. Thanks! This weekends was fun, although I was left stranded after the first day with a failed ignition coil (BHR coil too which surprised me).

Did you have any problems with sound with the RB exhaust? I finished my transmission swap and took it for a test drive yesterday. Looking forward to getting some track time in now :-) |
He has the RB dual tip catback, with the BHR midpipe... no issues with sound...
I ran the RB single tip with the RB dual resonated one, no issues with sound. However, with the non-resonated midpipe last year, I didn't pass sound. have some updates, but need to dig them up, haha. I set a PB at Laguna, have an old buttonwillow time PB, and another at big willow, haha. Last weekend, I did: Chuckwalla CW - 2:08.30 - R3 on FCM coilovers, hawk HP+, 255/40/17 Nexen Nfera Sur4 on 17x9 RPF1, AEM intake, RB midpipe & catback |
I shaved off some additional time at Summit Point Main Circuit. Best time is now 1:22.98. Street car, 194WHP, 2919# with driver, coilovers, full interior, A/C, radio, no aero.
Hopefully this link works. https://www.serious-racing.com/p/KlfE.html |
i have a bunch of updates...
Summit Point Main - 1:22.95 Summit Point Shenandoah - 1:41.89 Summit Point Jefferson - 1:20.92 (SCCA TT2 track record) Dominion Raceway - 1:33.42 (NASA TTD track record) PittRace Full - 1:59.55 (NASA TTD track record) Watkins Glen - 2:17.60 VIR full - 2:10.96 194WHP, 2930# with driver, street driven, full interior, A/C heat radio, comfortable, using equivalent of fast 200TW tires (some were on slower street tires, some were on old slicks from 2015, etc... none of these were on fresh Hoosiers, cuz i'm cheap...) |
2 updates, Roebling Road
In the damp - Brandy (RIP) - 1:28.8 In the dry, cold day - Jessica - 1:26.9 Both Cars DD. Powertrix coil over and Progress bars. Jessica was with R888R : ))))) |
my personal best at Summit Point, 1:23.1, NASA ST/TT5 prep.
this video is not from that fastest session. |
I finally get to post something!
NOLA Motorsports Park Long (with the esses) - 2:05.82 Car is DSP autocross prepped, but was running street tires. First time running that track and also first HPDE event. Broke something the last session (axle or u joint I think) but happy the car performed the whole weekend! We experimented with the autocross style spoiler and it did in fact offer a lot of high speed stability (especially under braking) but we lost 7 mph on the front straight due to it. |
Was back at Sonoma a couple weeks ago. A little smokey, but it kept the temps down which made for some quick laps. New PB, although in a different RX-8 to my earlier times...
Sonoma (long) - 1:54.47 -- blu3dragon -- RX-8 S1, estimated at 185rwhp and 3000lbs w/driver. S2 transmission & Diff. Race seat, harness & roll bar. APR wing & DIY splitter, Fatcat coilovers, 5th day on Toyo RR 255/40/17 tires (and one is pretty much done now, the other 3 could do a 6th day). It was a good day, although I do feel like there is more time to be had out of my current setup :-) |

Couple of new times for me:
Thunderhill West CW (reverse) - 1:25.25 -- blu3dragon -- RX-8 S1, estimated at 185rwhp and 3000lbs w/driver. S2 transmission & Diff. Race seat, harness & roll bar. APR wing & DIY splitter, Fatcat coilovers, Toyo RA1 255/40/17 tires. Previously my rain tires. Now worn to slicks :-D Fun track, first time I've run it in reverse and I had a blast. Cool temps made for quick times, but also challenging since it was wet in the morning. Video below. I didn't get video for the laps in the regular direction. |
Went a little faster on TH West CCW (normal direction)
Thunderhill West - 1:25.47 -- blu3dragon -- RX-8 S1, estimated at 185rwhp and 3000lbs w/driver. S2 transmission & Diff. Race seat, harness & roll bar. APR wing & DIY splitter, Fatcat coilovers, xxth day on Toyo RA1 255/40/17 tires. (I need to count the days on these tires, but they are pretty much done). Thunderhill 5 mile with bypass - 3:19.570 -- blu3dragon -- RX-8 S1, estimated at 185rwhp and 3000lbs w/driver. S2 transmission & Diff. Race seat, harness & roll bar. APR wing & DIY splitter, Fatcat coilovers, 1st day on Toyo RR 255/40/17 tires. (There's still more time for me to find here, it's hard to put a full lap together) |
my first time at Mid Ohio this past weekend. getting some seat time in preparation for NASA national event later this year. my best was 1:40.2, was done on the second session of the day, when track condition and tires were the best. i drove better later in the day after learning the track some more but track condition got worse.
