How to start an Auto Crossing for novice?

I am interesting to join some events in San Francisco Bay area.

I have been reading around many web for AutoX for novice.
Still I have no idea where to start.

http://sfrscca.org/
provide some info, however, some links are dead.

Start with the driver.

Do I need to be an yearly member? (The member info page is down.)
Do I need to to register be for track day? Is walk-in ok?
I've read that I should bring drink, food, sun block, umbrella etc. What else?
Do I need to buy a helmet? Rent? Where can I rent it? What type of helmet do I need?

How to prepare the car?

Do car jack and inflation kit are ok to leave in the car?
What else can I leave in the car?
Anything that I should know?

What class will I be in?

I have Mazdaspeed front, CF oem style side, and AutoEXE rear with Mazdaspeed wing on.
(Pix of my car might help, https://www.rx8club.com/forum/album.php?albumid=33)

Performance mods are intake, cat-back, grounding kit, Cobb AP and cross-drilled brake rotors. Otherwise, all stock.

Thank you so much.
Hope to see you at the track.

Thanks,
Tony

Try http://www.baautox.com/forum/index.php

You have to be a member to run with SCCA, you can get a weekend membership, but if you are going to run a lot get a full membership.
Most places let you walk up.
Might want to bring a small fold up chair.
Most clubs have loaner helmets.
You can leave those items in, as long as they are secure.

Sounds like your car would be in STX.

Hi Tony, for the SF Region SCCA, here is the main site:

http://www.sfrscca.org/content/view/4555/32/

you can see from the schedule that the next event is on 2/22 at Oakland Coliseum.

There's also another club, American AutoX, that is running at Alameda NAS this season:
http://www.americanauto-x.com/

looks like their first event of the season is next month.

one last thing, for the sake of AutoX classification, although your post mentions 'stock' a few times, it appears your car in current form is definitely not in "Stock" class per SCCA rules. just a heads-up. ULLOSE's post above gives guidance.

good luck and have fun!! At the SCCA events at least, you will definitely have other RX8s around you as the car is well represented in SFR.

Hi Tony,

I'm glad you found your way back to this board, after speaking with me last weekend, as there is great information here.

As Gulaman pointed out, the next SCCA event will be on the 22nd. STX runs in the 4th group, so you will want to get to the site by about 8AM or so, to give yourself time to walk the course prior to the event starting. You will be working in the 2nd group and you need to sign up for your work assignment when you register...but, you really don't need to register until the first group is running (actually, it is better to wait, as it allows all those in the first group to register without causing too long of a line at the registration table). The best work assignment, when starting out, is to work course, as you will be able to observe the cars on course.

www.baautox.com is our local autocross board and you'll learn quite a bit about how the region runs and other aspects relative to getting started. As a matter of fact, there is a "New to Autocross" section which should be helpful.

Here's a link to a thread specifically on walking/learning courses:

Just remember you won't be the only person there whose a first timer, so relax when you're there. I recommend co-riding with somebody before your class so you can get a feel for the course in a car, not just walking it. Everybody is very nice and will most likely let you ride with them on their first run. There's always somebody that will be slower than you so dont feel nervous about "being the slowest one at the track"

I went to my first event last week in Ft Myers, Florida. They lent me a helmet for the 2 days and kept my license as a deposit. On Saturday there were 2 tracks a novice school and test and tune. I did the novice school and immediately Mike jumped in my car and talked me though driving fast and where to place the car we did 4 laps starting slow and getting faster each time. Then he got in my car and showed me how to drive it like you stole it as he put it, I spent the rest of the weekend trying to replicate it. I really enjoyed the whole weekend, I is the most fun I have ever had in a car. Everyone is helpful giving tips on driving tire pressures etc. I have already bough a helmet and ordered my car numbers for next week.
