Had the good fortune to try out a friend's new Lexus LS 460 (about 380 hp engine) and do some zero to sixty runs using the new iPhone app "Dynolicious". Here are the results, the best of 3 runs. Also did the same for our nimble 8 (6 speed MT). Keep in mind this was done in 91 degree temps on a deserted flat stretch of road.

Lexus LS 460:

0-30 - 3.36
0-40 - 4.71
0-50 - 6.22
0-60 - 7.85

RX-8:
0-30 - 3.38
0-40 - 4.88
0-50 - 6.41
0-60 - 8.03

BTW, most car mag tests show the Lexus doing about 5.8 seconds zero to sixty. Would be interested to see how anyone else her has fared with this iphone app.

 

the problem is that you are using an iphone app to test your 0-60.

either that or both of you are terrible drivers.

there is no way the rx8 (6MT) does an 8 second 0-60. that'd put it in mid 16s quartermileville.

 

You're missing the forest for the trees here. SAME DRIVER, SAME EXACT CONDITIONS, for both cars (same time of day etc).

How much driving skills does it take to stomp the throttle down full on a Lexus and hold the steering wheel tight? Keep in mind that car is supposed to be two seconds quicker than my result. As for my technique with the 8 launch, I revved it to 4000 rpm, released the clutch, minimal wheel spin, redlined in 1st and 2nd gear.

It doesn't matter if the Dynolicious is off 2 seconds from the professional tests, as long as things are constant. It is a still a good reference tool.

One last thing: over on the BMW boards a guy claims 6 seconds flat, zero to sixty, in his M3 using this app.

 

then i guess we can see that the m3 goes 0-6 in 4 seconds flat.

in 9 seconds, im doing 76mph. (1/8 mile track)

so 8 seconds for 60mph is not plausible.

 

assuming you can repeat the testing and get similar results, then you are correct - the actual numbers don't matter, you have a good way to test out mods and compare vehicles.

people get too caught up in the numbers themselves, and not what the numbers mean.

a number is meaningless without proper context.
