DRIFTING in your RX-8

Drifting is my passion. iv participated in a few clinics and feel good about my improvement over the last 7 months. as you may know our car is a little snap happy when you really try to get it to rotate. lightning fast counterstear and steady throttle is a must for a good drifting exit. im very interested in hearing any other words of wisdom or see any picks of an 8 slideways. i hope there are more 8 owners who share my interests.......

mspeed11 07-01-2004 01:35 AM

Buller.........Buller........ someone at least tell me they like doing doenuts in their car

ByeByeHonda 07-01-2004 09:20 AM

Well, to be honest with you I love my car a little more than that. I'll run it on a drag strip, but doing donuts... The car was meant to drive straight (maybe not that hard), but is wasn't made to sit there and do donuts. Thats just my opinion and I'm sure someone will choose to argue

mspeed11 07-01-2004 07:34 PM

i assure you my car does anything but "sit there". if you pride yourself on being able to make your car go in a straight line, thats cool....i guess. instead of speed shifting and thrashing your gearbox why dont you try a more advanced move like a heal toe or even a down shift every once and awhile. our car was meant to be a track (road course) car not a 1/4 mile monster. you should have bought a mustang......jk

cgrx 07-01-2004 07:57 PM

Doughnuts are a blast ! I haven't done any drifting though. I'd love to give it a shot

ranger4277 07-01-2004 07:59 PM

I haven't done any real drifting except wet autoXing at rotary revolution :) Unfortunately no photos... but when the DVD of the event comes out I should have some video! No, I wasn't going for time on those runs... :p

This car is a blast to get sideways.

mspeed11 07-01-2004 08:14 PM

i want to see the video! there are some picks of my car at jzdigital.com from the falken thing a few months ago. if they are still there:/ has anyone seen the JIC car in action? his motor blew a few days before formula D!!!!! i was unable to find out why...

Mistryl 07-02-2004 01:16 AM

how easy is it to get the car to kick out? i can do it really easily on my friend's rx-7 drift setup, but i haven't had the time to try it out with the 8 in an empty parking lot yet....the only place where i go to drift is on a mountain road, so i want to try it out first in a safe, controlled environment. so how easy is it to kick out? roughly how fast is everyone going?

mspeed11 07-02-2004 01:47 AM

the best way is by shift locking in 2nd. you will be going about 45-55 mph when you turn in and then let the clutch out without rev matching in 2nd gear. if i was you i would practic alot in the parking lot and be very fast with your counter stear!!!! also, stay in the gas ( about 6000 to 7800 revs ) our car has alot of camber in the rear that makes it hard to controle a power over drift or a braking drift. the other good way is to kick the clutch in a turn. if your comeing out of a turn and right into another, just push the clutch in without letting of the gas (for about 1-1.5 sec) then releas the clutch. the back will step out slower than the shift lock.

mspeed11 07-02-2004 01:54 AM

my big prob at the falken clinic was plowing:( if you charg in to fast and cut the weal to sharp, the fronts will hop up and push right threw the turn!!!!!!! swing the car away from the turn then back into the turn to get the body role to work in your favor. i kept loosing it all the way around because my counter stear was to slow and not enough angel for the front to have a good line to track.

mspeed11 07-02-2004 02:05 AM

the 7's are very easy to play with in terms of drifting. the 8 is setup for grip from the factory. im working on finding some 9 or 91/2 wide rims for the front so i will have enough grip to jerk the car around any turn. in a 7(most) all you have to do is enter the turn and hamer it but with the 8 it seams like you have to make it do everything. do you have the drift bible? the practice section of the dvd is real cool. hall ass in 1st, cut the weal, pull the e-brake and dump the clutch..........now thats fun!

mspeed11 07-02-2004 02:17 AM

another thing.....you may want to take out your abs fuse befor hand. something about the sinsors that confusses them when the weals go from turning forward to backwards all of a sudden. the car doesnt want to stop for a few sec.!!! not good if your close to a wall or something.

NAVILESRX8 07-02-2004 09:56 PM

Hey, Mspeed...I attended the DGtrials drift event at Englisghtown NJ last Wed.

I just swapped the rear tires for a pair of FD 16X8 rims with some used 205-50-16 Goodyear hp's. It looked retarded but it drifted very well. The car has a soft floaty suspension, controls are a little sluggish, and the body takes a while to take a set, but once it was sideways it was very easy to keep sideways. I am very happy with the performance, it was my 1st real attempt at drifting in the RX8. I used to drift an AE86 Corolla with a real good suspension, the Corolla was twitchy and hard to keep sideways, so compared to it, the RX8 is soft but much more stable. I am going to drift it again this month, I can't wait.

mspeed11 07-03-2004 12:42 AM

was it easy to power over with those tires or what? how did you get it to rotate? tell me more!!!!!

mspeed11 07-03-2004 01:36 AM

im trying to make a good video of my car sliding around, but it might take a week or two before im able to get it on here:( i wish i was a little more computer literat but o well.

It was very easy to to power over with those junk tires....

Astor 07-03-2004 02:15 PM

I plead the 5th for warranty's sake, but would recommend a stiffer rear bar.

NAVILESRX8 07-03-2004 04:49 PM

Actualy I'm going to go with the full Racing Beat Suspension package to start with...it's cheap, and it shouldn't totaly degrade the car's nice ride. When I can afford another nice daily driver I'll go wild with coil-overs and stiffer bushings and stuff.....

ive seen the drift bible several times...

mspeed11 07-05-2004 08:37 PM

good things good things. . . . is any one else in the austin area? does anyone have drifting stories to share or a video of an 8 doing something other than drive in a straight line that they can post. im so very interested to hear anything about anything!!!!

mspeed11 07-06-2004 03:03 AM

why is it that some people come out of no were with "I HAT DRIFTING....ITS NOT A SPORT!!!!!" . . . . . .ok then what is it? and why are you so hostel about it? i have come to the conclusion that most people that "HATE" drifting is probably due to the fact that the only time they tried it they hit something. why else would a owner of an RX8 have so much contempt for the sport of drifting....yes i called it a sport! and if a panel of judges is good enough for the Olympics why is it not for a car related event? just some thoughts.......

NAVILESRX8 07-06-2004 08:19 AM

Take it easy buddy....I don't think people are being hostile. Me, I love drifting.....I'm going again this month.....hopefully have some photos and stuff....

mspeed11 07-06-2004 11:25 PM

i just venting from an earlier altercation. im good at altercations...ok experienced, to say the least. "Shelly's man" was expresses his utter contempt for drifting and the drivers in another post at the lounge or some ware. o well

What kind of film did you have in mind? I didnt get a chance to goto the texasrxs tonight b/c i was busy. I have only been on one of their "unofficial" drives in the hills. It was nice...

mspeed11 07-08-2004 02:33 AM

i dont know really.....something in a parking lot and not very long. i have some home made exhuast on my car and i would like for every one to have a chance to hear it!!!!! i think the video should be of us throwing the cars into doenuts from about 25 or 30 mph. ill steal some cones from someplace if i need to:D do you have a camera or should i get my brothers from him? I think he has a trypod too. we should meet....

Mazdaspeedgirl 07-11-2004 01:02 PM

Nice to see some other Austin guys here. Former prez of the Texas RXs club here. I still make it down for some of the events.

I didn't see an answer to the question, but where did you do these drifting clinics, mspeed11? Dallas? Houston?

mspeed11 07-11-2004 08:16 PM

the clinics were held at gulf grayhound 1/2 way to galveston. ther is also a small oval and 1/8 drag opend to the public for $25 on thursday nights. the oval is fun to drift. the way they set it up is really cool. you stage at the start of the first straight and go almost all the way around the track befor you slide off the banked turn down into the mid feild threw the shakane and out up onto the banked turn and around to the stageing area. for the life of me i cant remember the name of the park but they are located off the belt way north east side. they even keep the lights on till about 2 or 3! how cool is that? i got to go to the formula D thing at reliant areana. the mopar viper is awsome!!! so you like to drift?

Mazdaspeedgirl 07-11-2004 10:02 PM

I have never tried it, but it looks fun. hmm....RE040's are expensive though... :D
I would like to go watch sometime. Maybe one weekend if I can find out the schedule. :)

Are you going to the Texas RXs drive on this coming sunday (18th)? I am trying to decide between that or autocrossing the new 8.

mspeed11 07-11-2004 10:32 PM

i think im in love....jk wow your awesome. i have to work sat and sun till seven:( i have some trash tiers that just need rims if you want to practice hehehehe im such a sucker for a girl in a mazda. you do allot of autocrossing in your miata. i bet you can drive your ass off cant you. i bet you drive better than your husband don't you????

takahashi j 07-12-2004 10:47 AM

Ive been to that drift event in houston. Although i didnt drift the 8, there were lotta 240s there...I believe that the park is called Houston Speedway (http://www.houstonspeedway.com/).

mspeed11 07-14-2004 08:58 PM

your the man! im so pumped! i just ordered K&N(silver), racing beat front and rear sway, mazda trix front drilled and slotted rotors, hawk blue pads front and rear, steal brake lines and weal extintions for the front. now all i need is my dif and some coilovers!!!! bru ha ha ha well i guess i will need more but this is good for now whats up with you takahashi? im off on friday if you want to do something. i think i would rather do the video after i get my car in the air for a day or two. i have a creeeeeeking noise coming from under the the driver front that needs to be looked at. hit me back

JSE RX-8 07-17-2004 09:55 PM

i have tried to do a donut and a burnout with my auto rx-8 but its impossible so i gave up lol

mspeed11 07-18-2004 10:16 AM

you probably should try it when the ground is wet. Just cut the wheal and slowly push on the gas until you feel the ass start to come out, then floor it. Keep the wheel turned all the way until the rear tiers get up to speed.....why did you get the auto?? my Xwife wanted an auto. . . notice i said X :D its cool though, when you get your turbo youll never have to take your hands off the wheal :p you might even try to pull the Ebrake from about 15 or 20 mph but make sure you cut the wheal a good amount before you yank that bad boy and when you start sliding mash the hell out of the gas.

mspeed11 07-18-2004 10:35 AM

I bet mazdaspeedgirl is having fun today. i wish i was having fun with mazdaspeedgirl.....in our cars of course :D sorry i could not resist

JSE RX-8 07-18-2004 11:18 AM

yea i'm sure it will be easier once F/I is put into the picture. the more hp to the wheels for a rear wheel drive car, the easier

mspeed11 07-18-2004 12:52 PM

i found the mazdatrix drifting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.mazdatrix.com/8movies/rx8drifting.mpg
this is great. . . no body role

mspeed11 07-21-2004 04:59 PM

Oh man.......i installed my k&n intake today:D that with the straight pipe exhaust sounds sooooooooo good!!!! sway bars and brakes are tomoroe bru ha ha ha

takahashi j 07-21-2004 05:44 PM

nice nice...cant wait to see em...post pictures if u can...btw check ur PM

mspeed11 07-21-2004 06:25 PM

thanx......i wish i hade a dig cam:( hay if you wont your car washed(good) call me. i work at H2O during the day. we will make it look real good!

another8owner 07-28-2004 12:37 PM

since ive had my 8 i have played with alot of suspension setups, "i've heard" that coilovers, bigger front strut/sway bar and rear tower bar with no or factory sway bar only works very well to drift, be sure to hold down your traction control button for 10 seconds untill you see the dsc and traction control light turn on. hammer the gas, turn hard, pull ebrake, dump the clutch....then go buy new tires pending on aggresivness. a smaller skinnier tire in the rear is nice to practice with, they are cheap and much much easier to learn on since you can break them loose without much skill. oh yeah cheap frs radios are nice too so your pals can watch for the authority's while you practice, this way they can radio you to get lost before you get caught in someones parking lot " so iv'e heard"

mspeed11 07-29-2004 09:58 AM

cool cool.....iv gotn the sway bars and some cut springs and it handels great!!! the sway bars are soooooo worth the $. and that with a 2+" drop makes everything gravy. but now i need much more speed to sling it around due to the lack of body role. I do think brakes should be in the top three mods people should do for drifting. mine went out in 25k :( but i guess its a good thing because the slotted rotars are awsome!!! my next mod is a 2way dif :D that will make the most diferance to any drift car. just turning the weal will brake the back loose. and by the way, i know this is of topic but, me and a sweet s2000 did a 70mph stomp on the free way. his car was tuned well (all i saw was the big ass exhaust hanging out the back, cf hood, and 19" rims) he pulled about a foot on me till he hit the rev limit and i jumped a good car length ahead because i still had about 1200rps left in 4th. our car is geared just right for that race. my shift to 5th was perfect, and that was all she wrote .... i spanked his ass!!!!!!
i cant wait to launch aginst a s2000

keep the drift stuff coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shelleys_man_06 08-01-2004 01:14 PM

I still don't think drifting is a real sport.

https://www.rx8club.com/general-automotive-49/drifting-annoying-33194/

It's a driving technique.

Anyway, I think the RX-8 is an awesome candidate for drifting. The chassis/suspension should be a bit stiffer though. Demon camber baby :D!

mspeed11 08-01-2004 04:43 PM

actually camber in the rear is not so good for drifting........front needs it, but the rear barely needs any for a easy to rotate car. i really dont know why you are so against drifting being called a sport. every event at the Olympics is referred to ass a sport and almost all are judged!!!! but i really dont care now.....i do care what shelley thinks about it though :D

Gord96BRG 08-04-2004 02:23 PM

"almost all"?? Think again - most events at the Olympics are timed, not judged. Yeah, you've got figure skating, gymnastics, synchronized swimming, freestyle skiing - those are judged. So drifting is a sport just like figure skating is a sport, if you insist. Drag racing, autocrossing, road racing - those are timed automotive sports competitions.

I've got nothing against drifting - hell, I grew up drifting, driving big RWD cars in Manitoba winters, with snow covered roads for 5 months of the year! :D But it's entertainment more than a sport. You realize, of course, that the above judged "sports" are all controversial in the Olympic movement, with many people wanting to throw them out of the Olympics because they're judged?!

Regards,
Gordon

mspeed11 08-06-2004 05:18 PM

well thats really nice but i dont think any people that go to a drifting event go home saying "damn thoughts judges". your right "enjoyment".....thats what its all about. my brother drove a 1/8 mile car in high school and i can tell you that 80% of the time we went to the drag strip ( with was very $$$ and time consuming in terms of vehicle prep ) ended in disaster and disappointment. im not knocking anything or proclaiming drifting as the best "sport" ever. but i do think everyone that practices to be better than another is in some way participating in a sport! stick that in your pipe and smoke it:D sorry about that i couldn't resist. but everyone is entitled to there opinion. i ask you how would you feel if you worked really hard to be good at something, and be ranked in the state you live in just so you would be able to compete for a title....what if you won that title.........and someone looked you in the eye and said your passion is not even a sport????????? personally i could give a $#!% what people call it ...... just as long as people dont try to stop me from doing what ever it is people think im doing.

Mikelikes2drive 08-10-2004 12:23 AM

you talk alot mspeed11.... mostly to urself haha just an observation... this argument can go on forever... its like golf... is golf a sport? depends who you ask. Drifiting is cool and all and i cant decide whether or not if it is a sport... i think its more of a technique than a sport though... i mean you drift to go around a corner without slowing down... you use drifting in touge's and rally races... you DRIFT in those sports... but drifiting i guess yah is just a technique. Its like saying dribbling the basketball in all different sort of ways is a sport.... its not its just a technique you can use when you play basketball...

Mistryl 08-11-2004 07:05 PM

on the other hand, taking the bball example a step further, streetball is considered a totally different sport from basketball.
