This is for all the ppl who bash Hondas. I used to drive them, still have one and may be getting another one for track use.

Si ran a 14.1. That's pretty good. The Lotus ran a 15.2. That's not. If I remember correctly, the Elise is supposed to be a mid 13 second car - not so much because of it's hp, but it's insanely low weight. Then again, if I owned an Elise, it probably wouldn't see too many quarter mile runs.
First of all that is an Exige not an Elise and the driver should be shot. The car traps 105 mph bone stock and runs a low low 13 or high 12 and that one trapped 92.5 mph which means he probably let off shortly after the 1/8 mile or missed a shift.
Second of all, that new Civic SI was definetely not stock since it trapped 98+ mph. It probably also had a great launch on a set of drag radials. 14.1 @ 98 mph is a pretty good time for i'm guessing an i/h/e/hondata reflash new K20 powered Si. But that Exige wasn't racing, all the way down the track. Either way, that SI would plow any n/a RX8 in a straight line, hell some dude in a greddy TURBO RX8 just ran a 14.3 @ 96 mph

IMO, the reason people hate on Hondas is the culture not the sum of its physical parts. Too many 18yr old-think they're bad ***-JDM yo-street racing-ricers behind the wheel. I hated being stereotyped as such when I had a Honda. And like many Honda stories, mine ended in theft. Good riddence.

Note that I think drag racing is motorsport for the simple-minded. I'm just an advocate of "the right tool for the right job".

At least honda has a culture, when was the last time Nissan ventured into F1 or even Indy/ALMS/Champ Car, seems like it's been a while. Most Hondas are boring but the K20 is a very impressive motor as is the F20/F22C and when they want to make something exciting and reliable they can.

I know this kid in my complex that bought a 2005 Civic, I think he spent 18K. Since then he has spent 7K to make it look nicer and faster. Fast it is and nice as well. Faster than my 8 (not sure), nicer than my 8 (no way, subjective maybe), more fun to drive than my 8 (not a chance), better handling (never). The point is he spent 25K total when he could of spent the same money to get something a little nicer, sexier, better handling and maybe just as fast. But I guess the fun is in the mods. The only Hondas I hate on are the ones that look like a pile of **** and the drivers swear they are driving a nice car PLEASE! Save your money and buy a new car.
like i've said many times before...
"love honda cars, hate honda owners."
Honda does make great cars, and there are some really nicely modded ones out there, but unfortunately there are too many d*mb f*cks who own hondas that tarnish the image for everyone else.
This is also why i get pissed when i see RX8s with cheap ebay show parts... its gonna ruin it for everyone

Meh - I'll never be one to tell someone it's not right to dump money into a less than ideal car. With what I spend on car junk, I should have a corvette by now.
I personally like Honda as a company. They make good, practical engines. They manufacture a lot of cars in the US. I don't fit in a Civic (at least up to the last gen) well enough to drive stick and I don't like the chasis balance of the last gen of 2 door Accord (which didn't have a 2 door coupe available with a manual 6 cyl to my knowledge which is strange), but if I had kids looking at cars, I'd have no issue putting them in Hondas. And if they wanted to dump cash into wheels, audio, etc, I couldn't really complain. If they wear their hats crooked, buy fake FMICs and NO2 bottles, say 'yo' a lot, and enjoy vinyl flames, I might bury them in the backyard up to their necks and let the birds peck at them, but I'm sure I could still sell their cars for enough to buy something fun for myself.

you just answered your own question....
most YOUNG kids can't afford a V8 mustang (including maintanence)....all things being equal a civc is cheaper than a mustang. many of the civics might also be a hand me down from a parent. they are making do with what they got.
some also love the look on the guys face in the mustang that just got smoked by a civic....
i've always been the one to root for the under dog. why hate on someone choice of automotive hobby.......NASCAR doesn't count, hate on that as much as you want.

I should've specified certain Hondas instead of generalizing. I specifically refer to the cliche' 16 year old driving a Honda Civic with gauge cluster on the A Pillar, and lowered with fart-tip. You know the ilk. I think Honda makes good cars. It's just too hard to like them because they share this ricer association.
I can do nothing but agree about Nissan's lack of participation in North American motorsports. They take part in CORR truck racing, but that's it. They don't even sponsor the 350z's in Grand Am Cup racing. However I don't think I've ever thought about "Honda culture" and Honda racing in the same 30 second span. One is so far off base from the other. Believe it or not, I root for Jenson Button (among others). I'd root for him whether he drove a Honda or a Scuderia Torro Rosso car.
There are no Hondas in Champ Car or ALMS, although there will be one in ALMS next year, I believe. I'm a huge road racing fan. And for the Mazda fans out there, GO Sylvain Trembley (RX8 in Grand Am Cup) and Randy Pobst (Mazda6 in World Challenge)!!
To say the Z isn't good on the dragstrip, road-racing track and autocross is just inaccurate. In stock form it is the jack of all trades, but master of none. I autocross once or twice a month. I've been owned by guys driving plain Neons, and I've beaten guys driving Porsche GT3's. In general I believe racing is more about the driver than the car.
I actually like the S2000. I'd like it better if it had a roof... And even better if it wasn't a Honda
CosmosMPower...
your talking a lot of crap about Zs. Ask your autocross friend back home with the white S200 about our friend with the (almost stock) Black 350Z... and how bad he would massacre you (the driver) with your RX8 (the "better" car).
The Zs aren't bad at autocross, are better than the RX8 in the drag, and make fun track cars as well.

Wow...some of you guys are really worked up over this thread. I just posted this cause I thought it was funny the civic beat a lotus down the track. Hate them or love them it will always bring joy to my 36 yr old heart knowing I can take a $800 92-95 civic hatch ( that I will buy in a few months) spend $5000 and make a lot of cars at the track look like s#!+.......that includes the stang's and z's out there. I really like my 8 but we all know how much it lacks in the power department. And to date noone has really shown anything impressive with a turbo'd 8.....not talking about guys with a 20b in their 8's. Running a 13.1 (looks like the best time so far) to me is good but I have a buddy with an all motor hatch that runs high 12's in the 1/4 and another friend that ran 12.5 at the VA Motorsports Park with a single cam turbo'd hatch built by inline pro out of NOVA. Let me see...you take a $800-$1200 civic add $5000 for a motor swap or take your nice $30k plus car and buy a $3500 - $5000 turbo kit and still get beat by the piece of crap civic....priceless.

Besides, I don't think you have room to talk. I think you would be lucky to be within 10 seconds of any SM class people at nationals. Hell, as I recall it you barely edged me out in your turbo/modified suspension/tire SM car at pennington and that was my very first autocross in my bone stock RX8 that I had owned for 2 months.

Ever car make has ricers putting ugly crap on their cars, hondas are just the general sterotype when you think ricer. I can probably safely say I've seen just as many Nissan sentras with ugly wings/stripes/4" exhausts on them as civics lately, but nevertheless it doesn't matter to me. There are plenty of people with more money than taste, I've seen plenty of 100K+ porsches and mercedes with the equivalent of ugly rice parts on them.
Either way, Honda from a pure company standpoint probably has more involvement in motorsports and transfers the engineering to it's products well.
The 350Z is just not for me, it only seats 2, accelerates the same as a 2.0L 4cyl honda, doesn't turn too well stock and everyone and their dog has one (including tons of 30-40 year old women in convertible automatic models).

Your last paragraph is oooooh sooooo true. I have ppl ask me all the time...."What kinda car is that?" I test drove a 350 and G35 and they don't compare to the ride of the 8...in my opinion.
I bought a Honda Ridgeline last week and plan to use it for hauling our RX-8s (we're a two RX-8 family
) , I'm pretty impressed with it
I'm looking for an open aluminum trailer on the west coast if anyone knows of one

Back to the subject at hand... Honda Civics and the Ricers that love them. If the 16 year old lemming looks for a Civic that's 8-10 years old, he can find one for under $5k. I just confirmed this on autotrader.com. However, it also turns out he can find a Mustang GT that is 8-10 years old for under $5k. Which should he choose if he plans on frequenting the drag strip? IMO He should wave a huge American flag to the tune of throaty V8 muscle if he wants to go fast!
Start talking about modifications and the discussion will get stupid. If you put every dollar into the Civic that you put into a Mustang ... seriously ... who's going to win?
Disclaimer: I still think drag racing is dumb. I'm just playing the devil's advocate.
