Bodykits & STU

Is my understanding of the rules correct that the Mazdaspeed front bumper is not legal for STU, but side skirts and trunk spoiler are legal?

14.2.F states:
Addition of spoilers, splitters, body kits, rear wings and nonfunctional
scoops/vents is allowed. The intent of this allowance
is to accommodate commonly available appearance kits, and
replicas thereof, which have no significant aerodynamic function
at Solo speeds. Body kits are limited to bumper covers, valances,
side skirts, and fender flares. Standard parts may not be
removed except for the substitution of spoilers, rear wings,
bumper covers and valances. Rear wings must attach only aft of
the rear wheel centerline. Total surface area of all spoilers, splitters
and rear wing may not exceed 5 square feet as seen from
above (see 12.9). Substitution of rear spoilers or wings must
retain any original third brake light functionality unless otherwise
equipped. No underbody panels may be added or substituted.
The drilling of holes for the purpose of mounting these pieces is
permitted.

i'm not sure what a 'bumper cover' means exactly, but i don't see why the MS front bumper face would be illegal.

I was thinking that bumper cover would be like a bra.

nope what we usually refer to as the bumper on the car is simply a composite shell over the actual bumper of the car. If you take 'the bumper' off you can see that black steel beam thats attached to the frame i believe thats the actual bumper. Some body kits require the removal of that black beam, in which case those would be illegal i think.

bumper cover = valance, nose piece, whatever you want to call the body piece across the front nose

so yes, it is legal in STU

no, it is not legal to remove the structural pieces underneath it

Speaking of STU...

I have a 2005 Grand Touring, I have done NOTHING except buy Falken Azenis. I'm headed to Pro Solo in Toledo Ohio next weekend and not sure if I should run STU or BS..

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Beth =)

the STU Ladies index factor is lower so that would be the best choice, you'll run in the same Ladies group regardless

I hate to derail this thread but I think the answer to the actual question was answered =)

I'm slowly going to be doing things this season and over the winter to the car. I was told to get a k&N air filter... Would that be good to get BEFORE Pro/ And if yes, what would it help with? Excuse my cluelessness, I know NOTHING about cars and depend on others for advice =)

Any other advice on what could be done will be great also!

Don't rush the K&N it's not going to make a noticable difference. Just make sure your stock filter is clean.

Improve yourself as much as you can as a driver before you strt modifying the car...and when you do IMO start with the suspension...Good move on some competitive street tires only wish I would've done the same 1st.
