I m sure u can knock a few secs off without the speed limiter. the lower part of the track is all high speed corners, i m sure the 8 can easily handle those corners.

A few second.... it is more like 8-10 sec at the minimum.

OK guys, thank you very much for all the interest. I have just returned home to settle down from the weekend of racing. Let me answer your questions one by one.

chiketkd: Please take a look at http://www.macau.grandprix.gov.mo/gp...lt.php?lang=en, the organiser put me on Class A against those monster machine, because they read the RX-8 rotary as a 2,616cc engine + a turbocharger they times the capacity by 1.7, so I got placed in Class A, but if you look carefully, there is a RX-7 placed in Class C as 1,300cc with no chargers, which is all nuts in a way. There were 21 cars racing and 6 in Class A.

patrick331: The track is one of its kind, I rate it over the Nurburgring!! It has no run off area, which test your nerve and driving skill, I am sure to be there next year!!

Mazdaspeed 88: 11 out of 21, well no the best result but at least I finished! Haa haa... I promised myself to do much better next year. I had a nightmare with the speed limiter. Thank you for your advice, but with it turbocharged, the Knightsport wouldn't work for me.

Kafka: Yes, I got capped 180km/h on the straight, I should do much better and more TV coverage if I had the top speed, I am sure the RX-8 could beat the NSXs!

nycgps: Yes, I have tried the HKS SLD and surprise surprise, it didn't work. The car is using Microtech ECU but partly still controlled by the factory ECU, as I didn't had the plan to convert the car to a full on race car, so I kept the A/C system etc... therefore I didn't cut the factory ECU entirely. Anyway, due to the classification method, I will have to think twice whether I should use RX-8 as my weapon next year.

Im not sure if Hong Kong has the ECU reflash service but I know Japan and USA (RacingBeat) does that for you. Or you can buy some reflash device like AccessPort from MM to get rid of that speed limit cut.

Lucky US-Spec RX-8 does NOT have that 180km stupid japan limit :)

SE3P_HKG 11-17-2008 10:21 AM

My car has SFR Turbo kit, so all re-flash would not work properly with the setup, I must go full on with the Microtech and ditch the factory ECU all at once.

Awesome pictures! Would be cool if there are more cars racing, that EVO in front was just too fast.

Are you planning to transform your ride to a complete race car for next year?

Yes, he crashed during qualify session but his team got him back on the track over night ready for race on Saturday morning!

Yes, that's a mighty quick Evo done by JUN. The owner spent over US$150,000 on the car, it is a pure time attack car!

Due to the way they categorize the RX-8, I don't think I will transform the RX-8 to a complete race car for next year.

Thats a pretty expensive EVO. Do they only use it in one race?

I think as you said before, the classification was mainly due to the turbo you put on it. You could do a lot with NA rotaries and find the "loopholes" in the rules, afterall, racing is all about the rules anyways. Just like the NA RX-7 that was given an engine displacement of 1308cc.

The best place to win is Class C IMO. It seems the ruling organization have no clue what a rotary is. You could go the NA route and install a 2-rotor Peripheral Ported engine in your existing caged RX-8. It will push upwards to 300hp without any problems. In a +/- 2500lbs RX-8, you will take the Class C easily as the only competitor is the Lotus, which lacks straight line speed on the long straight. You should be able to stay in Class C with 1308cc, even if they use the "normal rotary classfication method" which is to x1.5 you are still under Class C.

This is also a very cheap ($) option, since you will be able to use the RX-8 and not build another car from the ground up. The rotary is also very reliable and cheap to maintain/rebuild if you plan to use it in more than one race per year. The only problem I see is that you cant get maximum power out of it safely, as it will redline beyond the stock transmission can handle.

Just a thought!

That RX-7 is twin turbo from factory, which is why I don't understand why he got placed in Class C, but anyway he didn't win.

The problem is there is no true rotary expert in Hong Kong, so all engine build must be done overseas, which can be costly. So, I may turn it back to road car and use something else for racing!

skyse3p 11-21-2008 01:27 PM

It's really nice to see a RX8 in Macau GP....but sad that u dun hav much support in HK due it's a Rotary.........

SE3P_HKG 11-22-2008 03:48 AM

Yeah... I wish rotary is more popular in HKG!
