I recently had the failed power steering problem that a lot of the members here have gotten. I tried cleaning the PS connector that was mentioned on the threads, but to no avail. So I then bought a used, perfect condition PS control module and steering rack and pinion from a forum member to see if that would fix my problem. Alas, I still had no assisted power steering. Finally, I just went and replaced the whole wire harness to the power steering and voila--it was back!

Now I have a working spare PS control module and steering rack just sitting in my garage. If anyone needs it, I will let them go for $200 each. I bought both for $300 each. Let me know if you are interested. Shipping will be extra. They are from a 2004 RX-8, but should work with any year if I'm correct. Dealer charges $1200 for ps control module, and $1500 for steering rack.

where did you order the whole harness from? Im having the same problems. I took all of the connectors apart and cleaned them. all was good for about a month and now its intermittent. i want to just skip the crap and order a whole new harness and maybe a new alternator.

 

I am having power steering problems and the dealership says I need a new power steering control module, the dealership also want to charge me an arm and a leg...do you guys know a good, honest place to find a replacement? thanks for you help

I bought this part from D.Dahle Mazda (Utah), they installed it in 08/31/2010, but the problem was in other part. Once I will not use it and I can't receive my money back, I want to sell it.
The part's warranty is one year and it could be confirmed with the service order.

I'm having problem's with my 05 RX8 power steering control module so say the Mazda dealship,cost big money.After reading there could be a rebuilt or used {pscm}if anyone's interested contact wiliamjbullard@bellsouth.net or here on RX8Club. but not real sure on how this message system work's try my email.

 

Bull, have you tried cleaning the PS connectors before you go dump a shitload of money on the module or rack?
You might want to do some searches.....especially if you have had any sort overheating issues with the car at all?
True it doesn't help in all cases(cleaning the connectors) and it doesn't always work if cleaning is a no go to hard wire around the connectors, so some have had to replace the whole harnees, but all of those are worth some effort to try/check before just going off of what the dealer says.

 

Good luck with the sale, hopefully to someone who genuinely needs it.

Let this thread be a reminder to people with the steering problem....BEFORE you buy lots of expensive parts....do EVERYTHING to clean or replace the connector harness. These control modules very very rarely go bad by themselves...

 

Well good morning all,that is here in FL. other's hope all fine! I was surprized to get a return on my thead?And yes I took the word of the dealer,but before ,I took it to a friend that read the code also,he said that it was the right servow motor heating up{i'm thanking he mean's the fluid}and that it was a sealed unit could not be repaired.Dealer just said it was the pscm.I did'nt want to spend that much,no have!Now I did clean plug going in to the pscm {small three prong plastic just above the steering column nuckal with 3 wire's}no help!But now I will clean the plug that goes to the servow motor's.But with all the theads about this issue I'm thinking this is another bad design problem,You know I realy like my 05!Bought it new and have no machical problem's till now,and have found out though u people that to get ready cause this car look's great,fast,sporty anywhere but has meany design problem's.IF there is still anyone with pscm let me know and thank's all for taking the time to thead me,feel free to advise me on anything that I might need to know?

 

Ok My co-problem solver's, I cleaned both plug's. 1 by the steering column nuckle, the other on the rack near one of the servo motors. Took sand paper folded tight and sanded the prongs even the grounded wire I still have the problem!
Next, how do I figure out this without having to take to the dealer. Also, could this be related to the problem with my AC/HEATER control module I saw on this form that this is another design problem with the circuit board and showed the area's that needed resoldering.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!!LOL

 

Hey, my power steering and left DTR light are out. They were in and out for three days and now they are completely out. Is it harmfull to drive my car with out power steering? I just don't have the cash to take it to the dealer right now.

I had this problem too in my car. After I bought the Power Steering Part at the dealer they saw the problems wasn't the power, but the rack. I used the power just 15 days and I want to sell it.
The part's warranty is until 08/31/2011 it could be confirmed with the service order from D.Dahle Mazda (Utah). Once it is almost new I'll let it go for $400.

First off, anyone with power steering issues, I recommend you report it here:

The more complaints received, the quicker an investigation can be done and recall issued.

Secondly, from what my Mazda tech tells me, it's usually either one of two things:

1. The power steering harness.
2. Power Steering Rack (either the motor or torque sensor).

He says the power steering control module usually never goes bad, and either of the above two are almost always the culprit. Also if you Google what people have done to fix the problem, it's either or both of the above 2 culprits.

 

well, mine was in the dealer for the shaking steering wheel a couple days ago, and they told me it is the steering MOTOR. I asked him if he was SURE that is what it was, and not the wiring harness or other computer related items. He said no, the motor and gears are going bad.

About $2,100 for parts and labor.

The question i ask myself is "is it worth fixing on a car only worth about $8k?"

 

Don't buy the rack from the dealer. You can get a new Remanufactured rack on eBay for $600 shipped, with warranty. Used one's can be had for around $300. The actual install is easy, and should only take a couple of hours, if that.

Many dealers always seem to misdiagnose this issue in the beginning.

What I would do is replace the harness first (and extend the coolant over-flow hose) as many have reported it fixed the issue. It's only $100 and easy to DIY.

If you are still having the problem after replacing the harness, you can then think about getting the rack replaced.

I'm not much of a DIY person, unless I have someone with me that knows what to do and not to do. I have this fear of taking something apart and not being able to put it back together (a fear based on reality, trust me). I also dont have tons of tools............or patience

 

Yes, the 'motor' is a part of the power steering rack. The power steering 'harness' plugs directly into the motor on the rack.

As far as replacing the power steering harness, it's really easy to do. Dealership should be able to replace it under an hour. (I did mine in 30 mins, and I'm not a mechanic).

Actual harness itself should only cost $100 at the dealership + 1 hour labor (or less).

A mechanic told me my engine is losing compression and i should get rid of my rx8. i Live in Chicago and i was wondering if anyone knows of a shop that can fix my engine..its losing power and i dont want to buy a new engine
