Decent condition? If you are going to get one, get one you know for sure is still within spec.

I am new to this engine so excuse my lack on knowledge.
Is a new $ 900 one the only way to insure "in spec"
I know about the chrome 2 mm loss ?
Are there other metrics I need to watch our for / measure?

may I ask...are you doing this as a project/hobby or are you doing this for a customer. This isn't really a engine you want to wing/guess at or your will be left with a sad face

I have a pair of "so so" housing, compression checked before I broke it apart and it was 7.5, not so good. but if you just want something on a budget, I can let 1 go to you for cheap. I can upload pics here if you want.

but like others said, this is ok only if you wanna "try it out", but if you are looking for longevity, this pair of housing is NOT for you. and it's quite hard to find "decent" used Rx8 housing, you might want to consider a brand new one.

2mm chrome? you might want to RE-READ the FSM all over again.

this is a hobby effort. I agree that short cuts or out of spec parts could result in low compression or short run life.
I don't purport to be an expert but humbly am trying to learn from this community.
I do turn wrenches on other Mazda hobby cars but this is a different challenge.
I am in the parts cleaning and evaluation stage.
I started with a bad motor that was kind of cheap and so far I think many major parts are going to pass. But I am not fully done inspecting yet.
I have a few advisors over the phone who are unnamed but in this business and I must trust their judgment on some of the technical grey areas. (many photos and phone calls)
I do not know where I got the 2 mm of chrome loss. I do not see a spec in the FSM but swear that I read or heard of a max permission chrome loss number somewhere?
Man if I am into 1 or 2 rotor housings this effort could go south very quickly.
I see spec of 0.0024 inches max width difference for a rotor housing.
I see spec of 0.002 to 0.0074 rotor to side housing clearance.
I do not want to spend my already sunk investment to have a junk pile that only runs 5K miles.

I'm sure my pair of housings can go longer than 5K miles. but like I said u gotta find that Engine FSM and read it all over again before you make your next move (buy parts)

I'd be willing to pay a little for a bad housing if you don't want it.
