This is such a horrible event. Sometimes we can't control our "actions" until its too late to recognize that we hurt others we care about.

 

Anyone want to do the physics on this. 3000lbs + 450lbs(people) at 60mph hitting a pole with 3 feet of surface area with no give. 3 feet of surface area because the poles diameter is between 8"-12". And vertically it will probably only be hitting 3' or so metal. In reality its probably a lot less surface area. How much force would the impact have.

 

^ I know, right. No car is going to survive from hitting certain stationary poles with any momentum behind it.

This made me think of this story from several months back where a wrx going over 100mph hit a stoplight pole in Louisville, CO, killing all three occupants which were about the same age and found to be drinking. The images are chilling and really shows what kind of force is at play here. A big dent in the stop light pole was the only damage to it.

how ironically lame/ insensitive that the commercial preceding that video news clip is for Jaguar. and, the news reporters seem so excited to report about this story. wtf.

 

why is it so hard for people to learn not to drive after drinking. this is sad but it gets worse if by any chance the driver survived and after the investigation is complete theres proof that he had been drinking hes going to be looking at a 30 year minimum in prison for vehicular man slaughter. i unfortunatly see this on a weekly basis.

 

Makes me wonder what you do for a living.

First offense I doubt he will get 30 years. 5 years max, but hopefully its 2 or less. I hope his parents help him to get a good lawyer. I've had family members killed by drunk drivers and even so mistakes happen.

I've exercised bad judgement many times in the past, and probably many more in the future. The outcome was never this bad, but even so I learned from it.

 

I'm a cop in city of Miami. There was 2 fatalities in the car and state of Florida is really hard on DUI specially when it becomes traffic homicide

I live in palm beach and I did not know of this until reading the thread. Horrible, Gives me the chills knowing that it could have been someone I know. Drinking and driving just is not worth it. Stupid.

Houston is pretty tough on...well everything. 2 years ago my niece went to a concert with her best friend(who happened to be next door neighbors). Long story short they had car problems, pulled over in the emergency lane, and a 20 year old who was drunk and asleep hit them at over 75mph. Whatever the impact didn't do the resulting fire finished. It was less than 2 weeks from Christmas and my neice was only 15 at the time.

The kid that hit them only got a year in jail. But, he definitely had a good lawyer.

While drinking and driving is completely preventable, I've done things just as stupid before (sober even!).

I feel very terribly for the families of the kids that died.

You have to be going SO fast to rip a car apart they way he did, it didn't even break straight in half, it ripped off a quarter of the car.

That kid driver deserves 10 years in jail, screw first offense, if you're stupid enough to drive that fast when you're drunk then you deserve it and more.

 

You know the other kids involved willingly got in the car right? They were old enough to weigh the risks. DESERVE 10 years in jail? Have you not done a thing in this world that could of possibly seriously hurt another?

i live about 5 minutes from where this happened and read about it in this morning's paper. odds are that he hit a reinforced concrete utility pole. These things are STOUT. about 24" square or more at the base and reinforced with steel. The car didn't stand a chance; certainly not while flipped.You can see what i'm talking about in the background of picture #2 in the first post.

We've all done stupid things, but I can imagine that we've never taken another human life. I imagine those kids were not sober, or they'd have thought twice about getting in....and according to the second posted article the Driver was a woman so they probably thought in their drunken stupor that she was the least drunk or whatever of the three...

DEAD is DEAD though! There is no reversing or learning of lessons from that. I'm glad to hear that FL is really tough on DUI. I hope she get's a vehicular manslaughter/homicide charge for each one of those young men. She chose to get behind the wheel, she now has to live with the consequences of her choices.

Last 4th of July, a man was drunk, no license, no insurance, and hit and killed a FAMILY that was leaving a local marina...The hardest part was the father....he was meeting his family there, and took longer than expected so his wife and children left the marina to come looking for him...About the time of the impact he pulled into the park and witnessed the entire thing!

He had no recourse, the man had no assets...so now he sits being fed three squares and has a warm place to sleep when this man's entire world is gone...

Tell me how that can be justified as everyone makes 'mistakes'.

Definitley Speed involved...but its funny how they say it wasnt from speeding bc of the way it was angled....i dont believe that. if no speeding was invovled then i dont feel too safe in my 8..

Who said anything about justice? My brother is a paramedic/firefighter in a college town. He scrapes kids and families off the streets all the time. The people that do this aren't bad people. They didn't choose to go kill someone. Some of us made bad decisions with no ill will coming from it. Some of us made bad decisions that effects many people forever.

While I agree that there should be some punishment for such stupidity, it makes little sense to lock someone up for 40 years for a mistake.

 

DUI is not a mistake....its a CHOICE..albeit a stupid one but a choice nonetheless. Now if the driver had a gun to her head.....thats a different matter altogether, he/she would have had no choice, but this is not the case here.

 

That has got to suck...
