rx8 project begins - package arrived from bhr

Original Thread Here

I had a change of plans, tax was up end of this month. So I am leaving it untaxed. My plan is to get it ready for MOT by Feb. Taxed for 12 months. As if i leave it to march the new tax rates come in to my car and i have to pay double. Then carry on working on the car until its ready for Late april .early may which gives me plenty of time for mapping etc before a planned trip to the ring in july.

Well i can only do so much at a time. First is the arches area. Ive coilovers coming but are on back area. Same for brake discs. So ill tidy up the brake dust guards first.

To do this i treated them with Krubb, sprayed with hammerite rust sealent and then the final step will be black satin paint.

In the meantime ive removed the rear badges and sprayed them black.

Ive also started on stripping the dash out to carbon layer the centre console, paint some bits and wire the guages.

Pics:

during the process

New clutch and sway bar (rear) finished after being painted

My last bit of fun

update today

update:

Wired in guage today, just awaiting the wideband controller for it.

video:

Got all disks off today, they look terrible from sitting a couple of days. hate the way rust builds up on them like that

carried on with removing rust and tidying it up a bit....

Update:

Bumpers are now off. Nothing wrong with front section of car. But back is rusted. So rubbing it down, removing some of the welds and welding it up again. I will paint it with hammerite probably just to be on the safe side.

Sometimes im surprised that the car is only 4 years old:

Still a good bit of work to do before i car start trying to fit the kit.

PS> since posting this on uk rx8oc, everyone has recommended sending these photos to mazda. as the amount of rust for an 04 car is terrible

UPDATE:

rust no more, front and rear bumper supports are done.

Where the rx8 badge come off. there was loose paint etc so ive sanded it down with 180 and it will get painted when the kit is painted.

Next i tried to fit the rear sway bar. Not so good. tried pentration lubricant spray, oil, wd40. before even attempting to loosen the bolts. First swing with the span and the nut on the drop link just dissolved. great, Grinder out. Anyway long story short. its off

new and old

the brackets and bolts that were holding it on are now off and soaking in a rust removing solution.

Finally got the front new way bar primed

what can you do to prevent rust like that ??

do you have to hose down the insides of your bumpers every week ?

Dont know where you get this idea. I wash the car twice a weak.

It is always waxed with either collinite or dodo juice supernatural. I do car detailing as a side business and am anual about the car being clean.

Salt is used on our roads alot.

For rust prevention i am undercoating with a rust sealer, then priming and repeating with multiple coats.

Thanks for all the great response.

I havent had alot of time this weekend. but front and rear bumper supports are now finished and rubbed down.

I coated the back with por15 and did the front bumper the same before applying the primer on top.

I left the halogen lights on it to keep the area dry. as its a kinda damp and moist.

there are still another coat of primer to go on first. and the front bumper hasnt fully been primed yet.

Holy crap. Just imported my car this summer, and looking at the rust on yours is scary. We salt the roads like a bitch (5 minutes on the freeway and the front and sides is grey). I'm taking the car to some antirust treatment asap.

Small update:

Flattened primer with 800 and 1200 grit, applied base coat (nb don't trust halfods to mix paint, look at the difference between front and rear bumper supports)

Once base coat was on I laquered with a rattle can, I definately won't do that again, I will mix my own laquer.

Paint still needs flattened but no rust

P.S. I went for satin black
