ha! I wish. That wasn't me (un)fortunately. It was an event that took place nearby Dallas. Some music, aftermarket sponsors, tons of cars and...rain. Skip Barber's school had 2 venues going on: AutoX Mazda 3 test drive (with an instructor next to you) and the 2 RX8's were you could ride shotgun with a 'pro' driver.

What is a good source to find out about these events? How often do they happen?

I'll make you happy: it's the closest I've been to anything even remotely related to drifting. :p

powersliding is in fact a form of drifting. Just that its not an advance level of drifting. I think advance drifters starts their drift during turn in (or sometimes before) and the car just slides into the corner from the start to end... woohoo.. it really is quite specatular... just wait for the maintainance bill to come up a week later... that would even be more spectacular.. not to mention how many times you screw up before you get it right

woohoo.. happy drifting

tires, alignment, axles, brakes, clutch, tranny. and if god forbid you hit something? prepare lots and lots of duct-tape. just sliding off the road onto some dirt, expect to replace front end, rear end trim, rims, undercarriage cover (if you have one), radiator/intercooler. hit a wall or ditch? ouch. theres a reason most people drift in $800 junk. even the pros crash like once every 10 times.
