Anyone Got Dried Rusty Water Stains on the Inside of their Rims

I bought a nice set of dark chrome rims for my 8. It rained, the rotors rusted, dripped rusty water on the inside of the rim, and the water dried. Now I have a nasty stain from a dried patch of rusty water on the inside (flat side that faces the brake rotors) of each of my rims. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

You're right. I got my dealer to paint my hubs at no charge (Is there not a TSB out on this?). A tiny bit of rusting has returned around the edges, but other than that, they've been rust-free ever since.

I had a local dealership repaint both rears at no charge (fronts were fine). The hubs have been rust-free ever since.

Why it has taken so long to resolve this problem at the factory is beyond me. Perhaps they figure that there aren't enough customers who are going to squawk before it becomes cost effective for Mazda to do it right the first time.

For the Protege5 the dealer will actually address the issue, though they simply just paint them gray/silver.

Still get the annoying wheel stuck the hub deal after a bit. Thus why my P5 has a small rubber mallet in the spare tire well.

Hmmm, after reading all the Rusty Rotor Hub posts, I feel half good & half bad about it. I just bought a Used 2004 8 with 11,400 K on it from GA and drove her home to VA (600+) miles so now I am just over the 12K warranty stuffs. I do plan on taking her to a local dealer to have the Low RPM vibration (Possible Cracked Motor Mount) looked at and I will try to pop them for the rusty Rotor Hub too. If they fail to comply with my request to fix, maybe I will just have the Chromed!!! Anyway I will post my results when I am done with my dealings.

With the rusted rotor hubs has anyone seen groves to go with it? My front rotors (2500mi on my 8) are rusted and really dark with groves...
Any suggestions?

I haven't noticed any rust at all, but I imagine that when I go to rotate the tires soon there will probably be some on the hub face. We don't get snow/salt here but the winters are wet.

I'm not a fanatic about the look of these kind of "working" parts. But I do admit that having silver paint on the hubs instead of rust does look nice since the wheels are so open.

The thing about Mazda's "normal" position is they are being self-contradictory. Why go to the trouble of painting the hubs in the first place? And since they do take the trouble to paint them, why not do a decent job of it? With the proper materials and the proper surface preparation. A half-assed paint job is worse than none at all, imo.

Believe or not, I went to get an oil change at the Dealership and saw no rust on any of the 05s.

Maybe it's from the salt water coming across the ocean. When I gave the down payment for mine (to hold the car), I pointed out the rust on the rotor hubs. I told them I want them replaced before I pick up the car in a week. If not, I won't sign the papers. They were replaced and so far so good. No rust!

This is a 2005 I've had for almost 2 years. Last 6 months I've had a garage, then during an entire 6 month period it sat in indoor storage. So for the 1st year of ownership I did not have a garage:

You can't just paint over rust. It needs to be scrubbed off, cleaned, primed, and repainted. So that means wire brushes and sandpaper, or something more technologically advanced. I just hope I can get the rust off without removing so much as to interfere with the tolerances.

Does anyone know the correct primer to use with anti-rust properties, and the correct paint to use? Also, the steel in the middle is not painted. What products are available to prevent rust from returning, without affecting the operation of that internal section?

Whether or not my questions are answered I'll try my best to research this, get the proper tools, and do a writeup. Hopefully within the next two months. I'll have to take vacation to do this because I don't have the time to let the primer dry overnight, paint to dry overnight, etc.

My mechanic told me that the better grade of rotors are coated so they don't rust on the hub. Is this true? Also, how would I know if a brand has this coating? These rotors suck. I drive my car as a 2nd vehicle, not in the winter and only in the rain maybe 5x since 2004 (19K miles) and they still are rusting.
