Excellent pics man. I like the steering wheel with the "suade" look, very sporty.

thats one thing i think they shouldve carried on to the rx8, to continue the tradition of having a forward opening hood on rotary sports cars...oh well.

That is the original RX-Evolv concept from 1999 Tokyo show and debuted the Renesis engine. Back then they were claiming 280hp.

It's too bad that more of the innovative stuff from the concept (or any concept for that matter) didn't make to the production vehicle. But, they have to weigh the practicality and everyday usefulness of so many things...like the suede steering wheel...that would be cool for about 2 months...then the suede would start to rub off and it would look like crap. And I'm sure with proper tweaking and no emmission controls the Renesis engine COULD come close to 280 hp, just like the original claim of ~250hp for the production vehicle would have held true if the U.S. didn't have stiffer emissions regs. Chrysler seems to be one of the best of the major companies to produce the cars closest to the concepts. I think what they do best is design a functional concept with the near future in mind. That's why I almost bought a Crossfire.

we called it the clamshell hood here in the past here is one post of mine from 2003 with one of those pics. there are more on the board here that can be found searching for evolve.

there is even one thread tiltled why didn't we get this hood with some dsicussion about the hood and also a close up look down at the engine bay with the hood fully open.

I don't see a 'redline' per se... only a tach that goes up to 12K RPM
If that's 'recockulous', how about the speedo up to 220 mph? :p

Those scans were well worth the 3+ year resuscitation on this thread. Thanks.

That reminds me from back in '02 when I saw the cockpit photos with all that chrome how I emailed the company some stiff feedback saying that the driver's attention needs to be on the road, not on the interior. A show car is one thing. A daily driver is another. I'm glad that they toned it down big time. But we still get the chrome flying-'M' in the center of the steering wheel to blind us with a sun glint every then and now.
