my poor car....

i was t-boned while making a left through stopped on coming traffic. there are two travel lanes, and both cars waved me to turn. as i almost completed my turn, a caddy cts rams right into my passenger side where my gf was sitting. he was going about 40 imo through a shoulder. what i don't under stand is why the side curtains weren't deployed. has anyone been hit on the side and did your curtains come out. i wanted to get some people's opinion on why they don't think my curtains came out, because my gf bashed her head against the window pretty badly.... but we are doing ok, we still have all of our limbs. the other driver's airbags deployed. is it true that you have have to be going a certain speed for your air bags to deploy? any comments would be appreciated.

hardly any damage to the cts... american cars are built like rocks!

yes in deed I would have expected the side curtains to deploy in what I see as a direct t-boner.....glad your ok but very unfortunately not good to your car.........
I hope for the best.

Glad you two are ok! Hard to believe that caddy hit you going that fast, and still looks like that. I guess all that extra weight in American cars goes to the strength of the steal?

anybody know exactly how side curtains work? i always thought that as long as there was a hard enough impact, the curtains would deploy. can anybody give a guestimate on how much the damages will cost the accident also scuffed up both rims too.... does it look like there's any frame damage anywhere. because i know that if our cars had a b pillar, the car would probably be considered totaled... thanks for everybody's comments!

Just an opinion, but if he came through the intersection, passing the other cars on the shoulder, then, he is liable, correct? so, the cost won't matter, since it will already depreciate the value of the car considering the amount of damage, but his insurance will have to cover it. Correct me if I am wrong.
And am glad you 2 are mostly ok.

Ouch, good thing everyone was ok.

And bump for someone who knows what it takes to cause the sides to deploy...

btw hope they are liable for it cause that looks to be a costly repair. The back section is dent which is the panel that also goes along the roof line, normally tack welded in...costly.

is it possible that he slid up the door when he hit, not a straight-on t-bone?

maybe that didnt allow for them to blow?

Yep, that is too minor a hit to deploy the curtains, IMO. Certainly not 40 mph at impact. This one was apparently hit at 40 mph and had the curtains deploy.

man it's hard to see wrecked 8's

since the guy was riding the shoulder, the police lady said he was at fault, so hopefully everything will go smoothly and his insurance will pay out. i was just curious about the cost of fixing the damages, or if any body notices any damaged points that will cause the car to be declared totaled.

i was also wondering if anybody know if there's a certain speed that has to be achieved before your front airbags deploy when you hit something, not just for the rx-8 but for all cars in general. because if there wasn't a set speed, wouldn't airbags just simply deploy if you hit something at low speeds. like tapping a car while parallel parking or something. i heard from somebody that a car has to be going at least 30 or 35 mph in order for the front airbags to deploy in a collision.

There is a side airbag sensor mounted at floor level on each side of the car. There is also one in the airbag control module located behind the dash forward of the gear lever. These detect the level of impact and convert it to an electrical signal. This is then compared to a preset value stored in the module. The module then fires the side airbag and curtain airbag if the impact is great enough.

There are no weight sensors in the seats.

arent there sensors in the seatbelt buckles to detect if someone is there or not though? i thought that if the passengers side buckle wasnt locked (or someone wearing it) that the airbag wouldnt deploy since it would assume that there was no one there...

Wow - bad day for Blues.

I was gasing up at the local Chevron, and there is a Blue with it's rear end smashed completely in! An Escalade creamed him from behind. Wait a minute, the Cadillac's are attacking!

The owner knew about the forum, but has NEVER been here

Yes there are buckle switches, but these are only used to effect during frontal collisions. If a front seatbelt is unbuckled at impact then the threshold for the second stage charge is lowered. The front airbags fire at one of two rates. If the impact is "hard" then two inflators deploy the airbag and it comes out at a greater rate. "Softer" frontal impacts will only fire one inflator. If the belt is unbuckled, then the second inflator will fire at a lesser frontal impact speed (ie, the bag will come out hard during a low speed collision) therefore protecting the idiot who was too stupid to protect himself.

This will happen whether the seat was occupied or not. There is a modifier to what I have stated above, though. The RX-8 also has seat position sensors. If the seat if in a forward position (ie, the driver has short legs and is close to the wheel) then the airbag only fires one inflator.

Gomez.
