I am currently living in Shanghai China. Yes,what i did is just simply drill 2 hole into the front bumper. No need for any plate holder or sth.

BB rules and like the red/black interior on BB. Was there no other way to get the plate up front?

The car came with a plate holder right in the middle on front grill. Like the other RX-8 sold in mainland China, all of them are Euro version.
Since the front bumper is ABS plastic which is stong enough to hold the plate, I took the holder off.
It now personally looks great to me.
