It would be grotesquely ill if those "notches" did light up as the revs built. Also when you flip on the lights, the gauges turn from white...to guesse what? RED! Anywho, it does look like they do cause they seem to not be so much as notches, but little holes, course itd only look good in the dark.

It's funny how Mazda has such integrated (read: hard to upgrade) sound systems on the 6 and RX-8, but on the MP3 and Mazdaspeed Protege, they thrown in thousands of dollars of nice Kenwood stereo equipment in stock. And those cars are built for the twisties, so both audiophiles and enthusiast drivers can co-exist in peace and harmony.
You wouldn't think the same company produced both sets of cars.

 

The more I look at that pic, the more possible it seems. Also note that the notches above the 0 RPM and 1000 RPM marks are closer together than the other notches. Hmmm, just like the 0 and 1000 RPM on the tach are closer together...

 

But if you notice, you also have notches on the other gauges. I think they are more cosmetic than functional.

 

i read something within the last day or 2 in one of bugers links that said somethiong like "offset" or "indirect" lighting on the gauges, i'll see if i can find it or maybe buger can?

 

I thought Bose uses special speakers with amps attached to them and it's all designed to work with the head unit? If so, how would you replace the speakers/amps and leave the head unit?

ok so it wasn't buger. it was herc's post in this thread . click the link to the third release pdf about mazda sport car dna. on page 9 of that article under the heading customer delight it says " Indirect blue illumination is part of the innovative lighting logic for the meter cluster." i'm not sure what they mean but could this be a reference to those notches? edit: and don't miss the spec sheet on the last page.

 

I'm pretty sure the pic I posted before with the notches is from the yellow car, because you can see a little yellow in the bottom right, and the top of the pod looks like it might be yellow. So, it IS out of date.

Now, onto the offset blue lighting...take a look at this pic:

The holes/nothces are missing on this particular version, which is def. more uhhhhh recent because the one with the nothces has the color coded thing over the gauges,.
