Highschool Nascar Club ***PICS & UPDATES***
At my high school I am in our Nascar Racing Club. Personally, i am not into nascar, but this was a great opportunity for me to learn about automotive technology in depth and in a hands-on environment. I am in Auto-tech 1 this year but for me it was not as hands on as i would have liked. So far in this club (started 3 weeks ago, mon-wed-fri) I have learned the whole brake system, power steering, frame structure, center of gravity physics and G-force stuff =P, differential gear ratios, and front and rear suspension. To all of you guys this stuff may be really basic, but for me...it's a learning experience.
So far our "Nascar" is in the starting stages, 3 weeks ago we had our first day of nascar club....it was a rush of excitement as our instructor pulled the car into the shop. Originally the frame/rolling chassis was sitting in a storage unit for about 8 years. It was rusty and was pretty beat up. Our first endeavor was removing all the body panels, windows, suspension, fuel cell, seat, electronics, and other things. basically we were stripping it down to its bare frame.
Next, the bare frame needed to be sand blasted and painted. This took about 2 weeks so we did not have much to do within that time span. Currently the car has new brakes, pedals, and power steering. This is the very beginning of the project...however, it is supposed to be show-ready by march 24th and race-ready by April first.
This program really is awesome, all the students are doing ALL the work on the car, only with a little guidance from our instructors. Our main instructor, Mr. Mitchell owns his own racecar shop, and he is basically sponsoring the project. His company is paying for all the parts for the car, and we just put them on. Mr Mitchell is also our team driver. Sadly, none of the students are allowed to drive the car. Instead! the whole club is the pit crew during the races. Our teacher has had the winning car for the past 15 years now so we hope to keep this winning streak going!
Sorry for the long-winded post. so here is a summary
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY:
Coronado high school in las vegas has a nascar club, I'm in it and it's a great program. We basically stripped down a 10-year-old nascar into its bare frame. within the next month all the students are going to put brand new parts on it and make it a winning car.
Updates will come periodically Enjoy!
The club members:
Our instructor teaching a student about the power steering
our instructor teaching us about the brake system and how to put in the bearings
feel free to ask any questions. ill update the thread as we get new parts put on the car.

I remember taking Auto tech 1, 2, and Independent Study when I was in HS. Loved the class, especially Auto tech 3 (Independent Study), all we did was work on cars in that class. We were able to bring our own cars in and work on them or use the shop cars.
