Fall Colors & First Snow in the NW

I'm a noob photographer, so these aren't great, but I'm learning...

Took a road trip on Saturday - Drove up to Mt. Rainier (Hwy 410), then out close to Yakima (Hwys 410 and 12), had lunch at Whistlin' Jack, went through White Pass, then looped back to Mt. Rainier (Hwy 123). Overall about 280 miles or so... Passed through the first snow of the season, then went into sunshine and dryness, then back to rain. The colors of the leaves changing for fall were awesome.

The first snow by Mt. Rainier, at 6000 ft. It was snowing so I only took a couple of shots.

Just down the hill a little ways it was dry and sunny. These are Fike's Peaks, and you can see a slight dusting of snow on top of them.

Just before we got to Fike's Peaks, this riderless horse trots out across the highway in front of us. I tried to get a shot off through the windshield, but it was moving too fast. Several seconds later, a woman in fancy chaps runs across trying to catch it - I missed her too... This pic is after she caught it and tied it up at a hitching post. The horse was not happy - pacing around and whinnying like crazy. Pretty horse tho... There was another horse tied up there, but it was behind the trees.

Bumping Lake - big, but very dry as you can see

Cool berries, not sure what they were.

My favorite of the fall color shots - really bright reds and oranges. The low clouds were cool moving around as we were heading back up the mountain on the way home.

The moss hanging on these branches looked kinda spooky and sorta like tinsel in a Christmas tree.

I was trying to capture the brilliant red on the hillside in the far far background, but taking the pic through the windshield didn't work very well, and I probably needed a telephoto lens. On the plus side - the car was moving at the time, so hey!

Time to learn how to use the manual settings and get a telephoto lens!

When we heard there would probably be some snow, I left it home. After being on those roads, I am so glad I did. It is friggin' scary in places - 2 lane roads with no guard-rails and thousands of feet to fall! Even in a 4WD truck it was still scary. I'm sure they close the passes soon, some places were already closed off for the winter.

NW = Pacific Northwest, specifically Washington state - in the Mt. Rainier National Park and Wenatchee National Forest.

Thanks for the tip on wide angle lenses! The only lens I have right now is a 18-70mm. If you have suggestions as to specific lenses, I'd really appreciate it. I'm using a Nikon D70. I think I should have hosted the original size and the resolution would have been better? I had already resized them. Lots to learn...

Thanks guys! I'm using a Nikon D70.

Sharkman and Darkrose - Please come visit!!

Dom - It was a Saturday road trip up in the mountains. Even when it snows on a work day, I try not to have to drive in it.

Maybe you should check this out. Warning: good lenses are expensive.
