Deal's Gap Weekend...
Well, my wife and I had a great trip through the Deal's Gap area last weekend. Beautiful weather for the most part, and we got to drive through Tellico, the Cherohala Skyway, Cherokee, and Deal's Gap via highways 19, 8, 165, and 129. We took turns at the wheel, and she had more fun driving than ever before I think! Not enough pictures to do justice to all the scenery, but as we alternated driving, it was a better idea hanging on than snapping photos!
We're already working our way up the Skyway at this part. We passed a couple motorcycles, but they were sightseeing mostly. Here's my wifey, and the B-Rex (Blue RX-8) chilling until we get going again...
Pretty views from these lookout spots...
We got held up a couple times here...
And again...
But we finally arrived at the Gap...here's the car, and my beautiful co-pilot
We were followed into the grounds shortly after by a European brigade; BMW's mostly, but also an Audi, and then a lone Honda!
This is the primary venue of these fellas; bikes of all sorts. Superbikes, tourers, cruisers, dual-purpose, and etc. I've been here a couple times before, but this was our first time here in the RX.
We spent a good little while in the shop and taking pictures of the bikes, but then it was time for a little hot-footed action. We thought we'd wait a few minutes for the others to clear before we took our turn.
Once again, it was better to hang on than take pictures! We caught up to a couple of slow-movers three times, each time stopping for about 90 seconds before taking off again. We just couldn't pass them safely on this road. Good thing we did too; there were THREE police cruisers parked along the gap!!! Not so fun for the sports bike grouppo!!
Here we are on the other side and a little ways down. Can you hear the engine 'ticking' a little bit?
I think I had more fun in the RX-8 then I ever did on my motorcycle; I sure took the corners a lot faster, and had less anxiety about potential crashes! Something about those big paws underfoot on the B-Rex vs. the little contact patch of a bike. Here's a big hug for the co-pilot...what a girl!
It looks like my wife is saying "Are you finished taking pictures yet? I want to get in and RIDE again!"

Thp!
Bizron, there were THREE troopers on the Gap between the start and the end. They were stationed at the same corners as the guys who take pictures and sell them online (Killboy, 129pics.com, etc). Sportbike riders could pass one and try to get away, and the other would just pick them up a little further down...musta been a heavy weekend!
I feel like Razz1 on this; it's not a racing venue, although plenty go there to try their hand at it. There are a humongous number of decreasing radius curves as well as blind curves on this 11 mile, 318 curve road. I stayed in 2nd and 3rd gears, and hustled down the road, but when other cars or bikes came by, I throttled back and just stayed in my lane.

Adding Pics from us129Photos.com
Once again, it was better to hang on than take pictures! However, we got some pictures "taken" of us driving by www.us129Photos.com, so we have to include those Notice the body lean; almost minimal! We were pushing hard on the corners too

Stock suspension...the wheels would "howl" in the corners, but they stayed glued to the road. Stock tires/wheels then, now I have Enkei J10's and Yokohamas. Good stuff!
The pics were $5 each for digital on CD, but even though I only ordered 4, he sent all he had of the B-Rex. Very nice.
