On the the following page, it seems that RE AMEMIYA was able to tune the car to attack Tsukuba track in 1'06". I know nuts on the Japanese language, if some kind soul out there can translate, would appreciate it.

Wow! There's a wealth of information here, awesome find! Some positive and negative observations:
The July CAR Top is interesting as it shows the Type-S now down to 1.09.73 at Tsukuba. But I'm not sure if the car is stock, as the print indicates 280ps - a typo perhaps? Also, the girl trapped in the free style doors in the parking lot shows the flaw of that door design.

The May CARS-I compares the RX-8 to just about everything from Porsches to Honda Accords. Once again the RX-8 seems to have bested the G35 and the Z too.

The June Best Car's test results of the 250 hp vs. 210 hp versions of the RX-8 seem odd. Both cars got about the same time for 0-100km/h and 0-400m (Japan's 1/4 mi.) What's more the 0-100km/h of 7 secs is way off the pace. This just doesn't seem right, perhaps a pre-production car with sticky ports??? However, for the 210 hp auto buyers out there, the performance may not be that bad.

This will happen regardless of which way the rear door opens. She would still be "trapped" if the rear door opened the other direction.

I wouldn't call it a design "flaw". When you park that close to another car, it will be tough to get out of any car. Also, if she had room to open the rear door, she will have room to close it, and still be able to get out.

But with the 8, I open my front door and need to leave it open to then open the rear door. My son jumps out, but then needs to crowd me while I close the rear. I then close the front, and finally we're both free to leave. However, if it's a really tight space, having two people getting out of the front and back at the same time is going to be very tricky.
Good point. If two people are getting out (one in front and one in back) at the same time, AND it's a tight squeeze as in this picture, it will be rather tricky.

If we compare the 8 to a 4 door sedan, then yes, it would appear that the door design is flawed, but we shld be comparing it to a 2 door...in a tight space, I don't think getting out of a 2 door is any easier.
In a tight space, maybe we cld do this:
1. front passenger get out and walk behind the rear doors
2. rear passenger, open the rear door and get out and close the rear door.
3. Front door can be closed by either passengers!
Simple really!
