Carbon Fiber Interior + custom gauge pod

CF is a wrap with great texture and look to it -- some refer to it as dry carbon fiber.

Wow, best CF interior I have seen yet! Awesome job man. Did you notice the weaving is opposite on the head unit part compared to your gauges above them? Did you mean to do that?

It does look like dry CF......not bad.

Does anyone ACTUALLY have any dry CF parts on their RX8's? I don't think anyone makes them cause they would cost so much. All CF parts I know of, seibon hoods and trunks and all that, are wet layup, and really barely save weight, mostly just for looks. too bad....

thanks for the feedback guys. The custom gauge pod was bought through one of the members here -- received it with a black shiny finish on it. I decided to go another route, so custom installer took that custom piece and cut it and created an inlay for it in the dash.

The material is something I got through the custom installer. It's a stretchy material that is easy to work with. I will try to find out the brand name

Some more info from the guy that helped me source the material...

This is not the same stuff unfortunately. I have worked with this and its great for outside applications, but its exactly like it states, its a vinyl.

The stuff Scott (rx8Thunder)used is an actual woven fabric, Has texture just like the real deal. No peel and stick backing, it requires helmaprene for adhesion (long lasting adhesion) some people use the 3M adhesive, its okay to use but will eventually lose its tack in the corners and edges. It is also a bit easier to work with as it has some stretch to it.

I (kris, not RX8thunder) have a few extra yards here with me, if any of you are interested PM me and i can work out a deal for it.

The stuff is sourced from a textile Mill in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. It was never meant for automotive application, it was originally intended for commercial displays. The online vendors all over the USA and Canada actually just buy it from the guy here in Toronto. He is a good friend of mine, and was the original vendor who sourced and introduced the stuff to the web.

Lol... you can get wet CF pretty damn close to dry in terms of weight and strength if it's made properly. Seibon and Viz are more overlay's than anything else... they just take a single ply for the top and normally slap on some black glass for the underside (or so I've been told). True dry (prepreg) is expensive 'cause of the required temp / pressure needed to ensure it cures.. basically the requirement of an autoclave which usually runs in the 10k-100k market... and with an operation cost per day than what most shops spend in a month. Pretty crazy stuffs. So.. yeah... you normally don't see that stuff outside of really highend cars, planes, and military goodies.

In any case, not to totally derail the tread.. thunder's car does rock with this stuff in there. Looks mint!

wow that dry carbon wrap is so sick. i wonder how well it would stand against the everyday beating we put on our cars. IE highway ****, washings, dust....

i wonder the cost for an entire dry carbon wrapped exterior. sooo sick

.....or rims???
