Wow it seems only 31 people have gotten their money back. From the forums you would assume that 60% or 70% would have gotten their money back by now. But, of course many are waiting till the last day to decide.

Or it could just be that they are currently in the process.. I don't think these things can happen over night.. It will take some time.

The drop was noticed "during ongoing testing that manufacturers perform after cars go on sale."
Yeah, right....can you say RX8Forum?!?!

Actually I emailed the USA Today's car guy James R. Healey a few days after this issue came up and he emailed me back today here's the conversation for those who may be interested. He didn't out and out anwser my question and I didn't expect him to it's not going to change my view on the car.

Subject: The RX-8 Issue

I'm sure you know about the power issues with the RX-8 and the offer from Mazda to either buyback the car or offer 4 year maintenance with 500 credit. I'm in a cross roads I bought the car for the HP (which is one part of the total package I know) but, with the reduced HP numbers and the questionable gas mileage do you think that the car is still worth the price of entry (I paid a few pennies below MSRP)?

With the disclaimer that I've yet to see any car or truck really worth the MSRP, I'll say that I don't think the RX-8 has been siginifcantly diminishied by the hp issue. And if you're getting free maintnenance and $500, that should take the slight sting out of it, I'd think -- especially given that Mazda insists the accleration numbers are unchanged (tests apparently done using the lower-power engines).

My uncle called this morning about the horsepower issue that he heard over AM radio, I think it was a nationally sydicated show or something like NPR.... anyways, the word is getting out.

Mazda found the problem on their own, about the same time guys here were dynoing.

So, for those of you who say "Why didn't Mazda dyno the cars?" ... they did. They found the problem on their own. And acted quickly to resolve it, since it was an issue on the forum.

The were aware of the problem, and acted quickly to solve it in one form or another.

I am so happy!!! I was praying it was ecu that equals we lost nothing and gained 500 and 4 years service this is just awsome imho!!!

Id rather have 500 and the free service and change the ecu my self then to have them fix the ecu and not get the service or the money! It is awsome that mazda has come clean and even explained the problem they had.

If you are truely into preformance then you will change the ecu maps anyway. Theres always more to be squeezed out of there.

No one has anything to complain about any more and if they do they deserve to be shot lol. Thanks Mazda!

PS cant wait for the first issue of the new rotary mag!!!

I don't think this is cool at all. The value of this car is immediately diminished with this article. How about the Mazda spinner saying the new rotary uses much less oil. Some people on this site including myself burned a quart in the first 1500 miles......

wow thats alot of oil..........Im going on 2.7k and ive only used 1/2 quart not very different than my rsx............

Value is a valid concern. I plan on keeping this car for a very long time so value is very personal to me since ive been waiting years for it. I dont think the value on the car will go down any time soon if anything i think the value will go up in a year or so.

This car is awsome and is even going to get much better i just know it. The community is very proactive and doesnt take crap sitting down either which is cool. I think now that Mazda has done what they had to do and has definately come clean we just need to make our decision and no longer spread the negativity as BOOSTED7 has requested.

Theres nothing else to really be negative about....Im keeping my 8 and ill be doing it with a smile.

Thanks and be safe all.

The value of the car will diminish even more - when Mazda unveils the Mazdaspeed RX-8 soon Most of folks will drool after the more powerful/better handling/etc. Mazdaspeed versions and not the regular ones
