I love this concept, it looks awesome for a concept car. I don't expect it to look like production cars, and this allows their engineers and designers to get creative. I am all for this series of Flow design.
And as for the back of the car, imagine Mazda putting the radiator on one side of the "hole" and oil cooler on the other. It would make a hack of a sports car with very good balance.
I think this concept has some RX-7 cues in it. The curves in the rear, looks similar to the curves of a FD bumper

Next Generation RENESIS (Rotary Engine 16X)
"In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminum side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine's merits of light weight and compact size."
Thank you!
Oh and The car is HOT!

I plan to be at the Tokyo Motor Show this year! With this concept, plus the new Nissan GT-R, I'm really looking forward to it!
Of course I plan to take lots of pics.

The news of the 16X is great, ALL aluminum side housings and 800cc X2 Rotors..
So the revised RX-8 looks like it won't be shown at TMS and RENESIS I will remain as it's power plant.
IMO the "revised" or 'Face-Lifted' or "New Model" or whatever you want to call it may fall a long way short of perhaps what is needed to BOOST slow sales numbers for another 3 Years or so production.
Will Mazda do enough other than giving us standard remote key-less start, foam in front cross member and reversing sensors...
IMO the 8 needs some gains in the RENESIS I output...
Perhaps we may see the New RX-8 at Geneva, NAIAS, LA, or New York Motor Shows in the New Year?

How much weight savings do you think the all aluminum plates would contribute to? 50lbs? or less.
And about the spark plugs, I think there will only be one per rotor, thats the whole point of DI (precise metering of fuel, and injecting under pressure for the cooling effect), so I don't think the DI injectors will be in the top of the housing, thats not part of the combustion chamber.

I think the front end is ridiculously nice, but the end part looks heavy and clunky. To be honest, I hate the Crossfire looking back end on all Mazda's newer prototypes, I really hope they do not go through with that. Keep the front end, and maybe some rx8 or FD flavor for the back end could be interesting imo.

Momentum Keeps Me Going
IMO Mazda's chances of solving the many rotary conundrums is much akin to waiting for Godot, therefore we'll be reading about it for some time to come. Let's check back in a couple years.
