A coupe is typically classified as a 2-door vehicle with a trunk. 2-door hatchbacks (also know as 3-door) cannot be considered 'coupes'.....neither should 4-doors.

 

i think winning the award 3 years running pretty much declares it a coupe- the worlds first 4door coupe

 

The RX8 is definitely a rule breaker.....I would call it a 'coupe' for lack of anything else to catagorize it as.

 

As far as I'm concerned, The RX-8 *is* 2-door. It's got two doors, plus, as a bonus, it's got two funky half-doors. Since a half-door can only be opened when its full door is open, it's really a slave to the full-door, and can be thought of as simply an extension of the full door. It certainly isn't an independent door of its own. Based on this, I'm perfectly comfortable calling it a coupe.

Except when talking to the insurance company.

Yeah I'd say undoubedtly its a coupe.. hybrid-like in its doors but still a coupe. The Saturn 2 doors with 1/2 door are called couples too. It however is not a sports car but rather a sports coupe much like the M3. Oddly tho it could kinda be considered a 2+2, but it actually has room for 4 so I wouldn't call it that... if insurance calls it a sedan... all the better for rates.

In truth, these days a sports car can include almost any performance car that is exhilarating to drive and puts a smile on the driver's face. Judging from the Cheshire cat like expressions of everyone around here who's revved its 2-rotor with enthusiasm, the RX-8 whole heartedly qualifies.

My ownership calls mine a 4 dr 1.3 liter 2 cylinder.
The fact that this car defies catagories is just one more cool thing about it.
