RX-8 whupazz on 330i

http://www.motorsport.com/news/artic...ANDAM-GRANDCUP

Will Turner, #95 H&R Springs/Turner Motorsport BMW 330i:

"The car ran really good all day although the BMWs still can't match the speed of the RX-8. It takes a track like this to really put their speed into perspective. We were up there and the car as good even as the tires wore. But in the end we needed fuel and they didn't. We're looking forward to Virginia but we're going to need a little extra luck to win the battle."

Lol, bookmark this one folks, it's the only time you will hear of the 8 winning something because of fuel :p

Where can I find lap times etc for GrandAm?

Wow, that is crazy, but sweet. I watched an RX-8 lose an enduro a couple of weeks ago due to fuel shortage. Now a BMW driver admitting a 330i can't match the speed of an RX-8, thats worth its weight in gold. I'm printing this out and taking it to my next BMWCCA meeting/HPDE.

Makes you wonder why though? I don't know anything about GrandAM. Could be any number of reasons, they could be hauling around Max reward weight for all I know.

If you want to read about the race win from the SpeedSource RX-8 team's perspective: http://rotarynews.com/node/view/684

They drove the car a certain way (whatever that means) so they wouldn't have to pit for fuel again.

Actually, a stock 330i is close, but not a match for the RX-8 on the track, no reason why the race cars should be any different. My old e36 M3, which had a similar engine to the current 330's 3.0L, got about the same MPG that my RX-8 gets. Had no complaints then, have no complaints now.

Bimmer fanboi? hardly. Any car make fanboi, nope.

Like I said, I know nothing about GrandAm. The title of the thread made me think that this doesn't always happen. I haven't seen mention of this type of thing before on the site, and I figure I would have. I think I saw one thread about laguna maybe. As well, surely this wasn't the first race of the GrandAm season. What am I too think. That's why I asked where I can read about laptimes etc. So I guage the performance of both cars. The assumption that maybe the BMW's win alot and are carrying a lot of reward weight this past race isn't far fetched if you consider what I just said. Again, I said "I don't know" and "for all I know" indicating I was wondering.

It happens quite a bit. The SpeedSource RX-8 has been the class of the GrandAm ST field since its debut in '04, when it took the drivers and makes championship. It looks set to take the championship again this year with 5 wins to their credit.

Their exploits are posted about on a regular basis in the RX-8 Competition (Racing) section. One of the drivers, David Haskell, is even an RX-8club.com member.

I'll have to start reading up about GrandAm. I don't have cable, so I probably can't watch it

I don't make my way down to the competition section to often. Everytime I do its autox this and autox that, not my taste. A search of SpeedSource revealed plenty of threads to wade through. Thanks.

This is all racing politics. The Turner team is trying to get them to add more weight to the Mazdas or restrict them in some other way, so they can get an advantage. Don't read to much into that statement.

Well, if the rx8 is winning as much as people suggest, maybe it's to get the BMW back on level playing ground.

better in what way?
Just because something has always been competitive, doesn't mean it always will.

The racing is actually fairly even. On any given day, the 330i, RSX and RX-8 could all possibly win. While the SpeedSource Mazda team is currently in points lead, the championship will still be decided in the next and final round. Last year the SpeedSource team was actually behind in the points coming to the final round and ended up taking the title. So the racing is close, unlike say F1.

The fact that the RX-8 took the championship in '04, it's first year right out of the box, was really a big accomplishment.

The RX-8 is also doing quite well in a Euro endurance series, where it also has chalked up 5 class wins thus far. That series limits the RX-8's class hp to 230, so the car is basically running in stock engine form and against much lighter cars in its class. (Euro RX-8s are rated at 231ps/228hp)

So to answer BlueEyes's other question under the "RX-8 Discussion" area, yes the RX-8 does very well both on the "Track" and in AutoX.

It's almost like Will Turner said that just so I could put it in my signature... It also sounds like something the BMW guys were saying about me at the track last weekend

I'm sure they are talking about the Speedsource car with Tremblay and Haskell. They rock. They invited us out to the Paddock to see their cars when the GA RX-8 club went to see them at Barber Motorsports Park. They won that race too with the Turner BMW in third.

The 8 just loves the road courses with the twisties. They just maintain a faster speed then. That's the 5th 1st place for that team this year.

At the Barber race earlier in the year, I saw the 330, RSX-S, and RX-8 swap the lead several times. #70 finished it first though!

The minimim weight for the RX-8 is 2650 for that class, and that's what the Speedsource team runs at. Also for the Grand AM series, they do some engine, exhaust and intake work, so they are putting out more power than we are.

I was talking about the European endurance series, not the US Grand AM series. In the UK Production S1 series there are cars that are much lighter fighting against the RX-8 in its class, can't recall the exact weight as it was in kg not lbs. I read about it in one of the UK or Aussie car mags, can't recall which mag either. But they said the car is basically stock, except for stripping off as much weight as possible, they even added carbon fiber rear doors. They were amazed at how competitive and realiable the RX-8 is with a stock engine, gear box, and brakes.

Although they didn't win the recent 24 hour race at Silverstone England, Mazda seems pretty happy that the Renesis engine showed how reliable it is in endurance race form by having several cars finish strongly in the race.

Probably short shifting for one.
