RX-8 Laguna Seca Lap Triva
Pawing for the upteenth time thru my assorted reading material I noticed this article in MT from 11/12 "Timing is Everything" concerning their 5 years of running their "Best" events at the track.
Some triva that might interest...
- 20.6 seconds is all that separates the fastest of 50 cars they've tested from the slowest around the famed 2.3 mile track
- The 2011 Z06 w/Z07 Package was fastest @1.34.4 seconds
- A pair of Mitsus, an '07 Evo MR and an 'X' in '08 bracketed .1 seconds on either side of a Chevy Cobolt SS @1.47.8 seconds
- In 2008 RX-8 R3 tied with a MasdaSpeed3 in '07 for a @1.50.4 second lap time
- 2012 Subaru BRZ in line behind the Mazdas @1.51.3 seconds
- A 2007 Mini Cooper S was slowers still @1.51.7 seconds
- The slowest was a 2007 Civic Si @1.55.0 seconds
... just some facts to ponder

being local, i've timed a bunch of fun cars with the stopwatch @laguna.
the 2005 F1 championship Ferrari, was something like 1.07, it comes out of the corners faster than most cars run down the straight, and makes noises i've never heard in a car before, it was pretty epic.
any random shifter kart, 1.09. these things are just retarded fast, 2 seconds off the F1 cars pace and it fits in a pickup truck!
60's GT40, 1.44. kind of illustrates how fast some of these modern cars are.
Bugatti type 13, 3 minute+, http://images.hemmings.com/wp-conten...13_01_1200.jpg
its basically a wine barrel on wheels....

Interested to see this thread resurrected since I will be there in the RX-8 with PCA-GGR on Nov 24/25.
I did a 1:56.8 last year in a 2008 Civic Si. Given that I'm not that good, it was damp most of the weekend, and my brakes could not last a lap, I expect there are at least another 10s in that car. That was with coilovers and camber, but stock size summer tires.
Looking at the MT times, I'm either better than I think (doubtful), MT are not pushing that hard (possible), or the factory alignment and tires are hobbling most of the cars tested (especially likely for any fwd car with strut suspension and zero front camber).
Here's a 1:46.08 during a sealed spec miata race in 2010:
If the weather is good, I'm shooting to be below 1:50 in the RX-8 (w/coilovers and Direzza Z2s). I'm down to a 1:44.xx with the MX5 cup in iracing, which is still 5s off the best iracing times , but I doubt I'll be that crazy in real life.
PS here is a link the MT article since it took me a little google time to find: http://blogs.motortrend.com/timing-i...#axzz2iZMK3uVY
