RX-8 Hits CNET's Guide to Car Technology
CNET's Guide to Car Technology
RETURN OF THE RX
After an absence of 10 years, the smooth-flowing body, aggressive stance, and silky power of Mazda's RX sports car returns with a vengeance. The only rotary engine on the market, Mazda's 2004 RX-8 can run circles around conventional engines because its circular motion is more fluid than the up-and-down movement of conventional pistons. This reduces vibration and cuts waste, actually delivering more power to the wheels. From a mere 1.3 liters of displacement (about what you'd get with an economy car), the RX-8's Renesis engine pumps out 250 horsepower all the way to its 9,000rpm redline. Quiet as a cat in everyday driving, it growls like a tiger when pushed.
The unique Mazda RX-8 rotary engine.
